Build your management toolkit: New webinars on hiring and supervision

We are always looking for great resources to offer the WebJunction community and appreciate libraries sharing quality content that they’ve developed. Thank you to the Vermont Department of Libraries, which provided three new webinars for library staff new to supervising employees (or those who could use a refresher) and those looking for tips on hiring and onboarding. You recently told us in the WebJunction experience survey that library management was an important topic, and library staff are one of the greatest assets a manager has to running a library effectively. This webinar series supports library managers in hiring, onboarding, and supervising staff well to ensure you can retain a solid team.
Three new webinar recordings for effective library management
In parts one and two of “Successful supervising in libraries of all sizes,” Kevin Unrath and Joy Worland share best practices in communicating, how to delegate effectively, and how to motivate a team and navigate conflict. They remind learners to consider how to fully incorporate volunteers and part-time employees into the life of the library. They also touch on important regulations to be aware of, personnel policies, and scheduling tips—all in a way that keeps smaller libraries in mind. Links in the slides offer a valuable set of resources to dig into these topics further.
Gary Deziel, a community development specialist at the University of Vermont Extension, shares his expertise in the webinar “Hiring well and getting your new employee off to a good start.” He dissects the job description and emphasizes the importance of that document to the entire hiring and onboarding process. His tips for onboarding are presented in stages, covering the first day, first week, first month, and three months and longer, to maximize effective retention. The webinar reminds learners that employees with a stellar onboarding experience are 18 times more committed to their employer. His resource list is an excellent place to learn more about behavior-based interviewing and writing job descriptions, among other things.
