Social Library, Summer Reading Edition

This special edition of the Social Library series is published in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), highlighting great ideas shared by libraries on ARSL's amazing and active Listserv (a wonderful benefit to Membership!). Read the first and second articles we've published in collaboration with ARSL.
These five libraries serving small and rural communities around the country are creatively promoting their innovative summer reading programming on Facebook. If you'd like to see your library featured in an upcoming edition, please let us know via [email protected] or find us on Facebook.
- San Juan Island Library in Washington (service area population: 7,810) kicked off their "Universe of Stories" summer reading program with their version of a Jedi Training Academy. "We have activities planned for you and a cool galactic photo booth with Star Wars props. Register for our summer reading program while you munch on snacks from our Library Cantina."
- Humboldt Public Library in Tennessee (service area population: 13,832) shared this fantastic photo of a young astronaut who attended stage one of Journey to Mars, a weekly interactive STEM space adventure to be held each Monday during the summer. In a separate post, photos from their Jump to Jupiter program show how kids explored a scale model of the solar system, starting at the library and measuring the distance between planet markers in jumps down Main Street. We were also impressed by the video inviting space cadets to participate in the summer space mission. And we love that you can navigate to their Summer Reading 2019 info via a top tab on their homepage!
- Athena Public Library in Oregon (service area population: 1,627) hosted their first Rocket Science Class last week, constructing paper rockets and hypothesizing about how far they would travel and how best to place the fins. "How can we create the most stable rocket without adding too much weight?" It was also great to see the impromptu post one evening, encouraging library friends to go look outside, to find Jupiter to the right of the moon!
Sharon Public Library in Massachusetts (service area population: 18,027) know that Peeps aren't just for springtime! They shared an album of the Peeps dioramas created by patrons, based on the Summer Reading theme of "A Universe of Stories." They instructed that "voting can be done in person at the library, or online by clicking like on any of the Facebook pictures." Congratulations to the winners!
- Mott Public Library in North Dakota (service area population: 793) will join many libraries around the country in celebration of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing Anniversary. The listing for their Live Broadcast and Myth Busters Party on July 15, links to the information about the live webcast hosted by the American Museum of Natural History and the STAR Library Network’s NASA@ My Library program. Host your own viewing party and be sure to explore more of the STAR Net resources for your Summer of Space programming!
