Wikipedia Book Citation Tool Links Readers to Local Library Collections

WebJunction /

Book citations on Wikipedia pages can now connect readers to the closest library that carries the book. Thanks to a partnership between the Wikimedia Foundation and OCLC, Wikipedia's citation tool is now able to use ISBNs to generate citations that link to WorldCat®—the largest database of books in the world, spanning the collections of more than 72,000 libraries. The citation tool had previously only worked with URLs, DOIs and PubMed IDs.

The Wikimedia Foundation's blog post about the inclusion of ISBNs in Wikipedia’s cite tool also highlights several other initiatives (such as the Wikipedia + Libraries project) that are bringing libraries and Wikipedia together to extend access to credible, trustworthy information.
