The five libraries featured in this edition of the Social Library series are using Facebook to spread the word about everything from library advocacy to fashion week! Learn about a new library anthem, a middle school lunch time book group, a head wrap workshop, a clothing swap and an owl meet and greet. - West Gippsland Libraries in Australia released a fantastic new anthem for public libraries in Australia and around the world. Living It Up At The Library was written and performed by Adrian Darakai - songwriter, and it's garnered many likes and shares on Facebook. Let's help spread this fun tune even further!
- Bellingham Public Library (WA) shared an article from Bellingham Public Schools about the middle school lunch time book groups hosted by BPL's teen librarian. "The lunch time book club started as an idea in 2013, when the Kulshan Middle School library media specialist reached out to Jennifer Lovchik, the teen services librarian at the Bellingham Public Library." Lovchik now visits one school each week, hosting a book group at all four of Bellingham's middle schools during the month. Students bring their lunch to the school library to talk about books related to a theme, which guides discussion, and then students share their favorite books.
- Willard Library in Michigan hosted a very successful More Than a Head Wrap Workshop last week. "Headwrapping is a beautiful art found all over the world. Come alone or come with family and friends and have an evening of culture, art, community and fun!" In conjunction with the More Than a Head Wrap exhibit by Beautifully Wrapped, anthropologist Zarinah El-Amin Naeem shared the history and culture of head wrapping and then participants tried their hand at creating some amazing head wraps, as you can see in photos of the event.
- Auckland Libraries served as a primary venue for New Zealand Fashion Week, hosting numerous free workshops and events, including daily sewing workshops, 3D-printable jewelry classes, a speed dating evening with industry professionals, a vintage fashion talk, a mini designer exhibition and printmaking and sewing workshops for kids and families. And we learned in an Our Auckland article, that "keeping in line with New Zealand Fashion Week’s sustainability focus," Auckland’s Central City Library hosted its third installation of Swap it Like it’s Hot, an event encouraging people to swap pre-loved clothing items for tokens, which can be used to buy other garments. Leftover clothing was donated to Mercy Hospice, who provide specialist palliative care to the people of Auckland. - Sussex County Library System in New Jersey announced their Live Owl Meet & Greet with the Avian Wildlife Center director, to meet and learn all about owls as they visit multiple branches in the System. "Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see these nocturnal predators up close and learn more about them." What a wonderful collaboration with a local wildlife organization!
