This edition of the Social Library series represents the variety of ways libraries are engaging with patrons of all ages, from a literary scavenger hunt to DIY wearable steampunk art, and from a circulating blood pressure monitor to a seasonal job fair. Using videos and clever graphics, these posts from libraries we follow on Facebook are sure to inspire. - Floral Park Public Library in New York hosted a Library Literary Scavenger Hunt for grades 4-6. "Are You Smarter Than A Librarian? Test your knowledge of all things book-related as you work in teams to complete our Library Literature Scavenger Hunt. Don't worry, you don't have to have read every book in the Library to figure things out. Clues will be planted throughout the space and you'll have fun discovering the answers! We guarantee it." And we love it!
- DeWitt District Library in Michigan has recently added a Blood Pressure Monitor to their Library of Things. Patrons can now borrow the monitor, which was featured as the "Thing of the Week" on their Facebook page. The library posted a series of quick start video guides, including how to put the monitor together and how to put a on blood pressure cuff.
- Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library in Ohio got in the spirit with their March Madness Tournament of Books Literary Animals. We caught up with them in Week 4 when the challengers were Curious George vs. Moby Dick, and Stuart Little vs. Black Beauty. The Tournament began with instructions: "There are 32 pairs of animals on the bracket. Pick your favorites. After week one, based on all the votes, we’ll narrow the list to 16. After week two it’s winnowed to 8, etc. By the end of March, we will have one winning animal. You can play every week! Print your bracket (or pick up a copy at the library) and make your selections." Further on in the tournament we see that the final two brackets belonged to Curious George and Stuart Little. Those who submitted their choices were entered into a random drawing for a Wheatberry Books gift certificate.
- Westminster Public Library - College Hill and Irving St in Colorado is providing three different dates for the community to attend a Seasonal Job Fair. "Looking for a summer job? A seasonal position with the City of Westminster might be the perfect fit. More than 200 outdoor seasonal positions are available. A Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department hiring team will be at the library to talk about different jobs, accept applications and give on-the-spot interviews on Saturdays March 30, April 6 and April 20. Ages 16 and older may apply."
- St Joseph Public Library in Missouri grabbed our attention with the eye-catching announcement for their upcoming program for teens in grades 7-12, DIY Steampunk Costume Accessories. "Using duct tape, hot glue, acrylic paint and embellishments, teens can let their creativity fly as they transform plastic party hats and random craft supplies into fantastic works of wearable steampunk art."
