This fresh edition of our Social Library series brings innovation from five libraries using Facebook to share unique programming and services with their communities. From building blocks to courtyard gardens, and from a tool library to an artist of the month exhibit, these examples are sure to inspire new ideas for your library’s offerings. - Cass County Public Library- Harrisonville Branch in Missouri hosted a Blocks Rock night for kids through 6th grade. Check out the wonderful Block Party photos with creations made from Legos, giant Legos and other blocks, including some impressive towers, thrones, caves and castles.
- Millvale Community Library in Pennsylvania reached out to us to share news of the grand opening of their Tool Lending Library, with over 350 tools available to check out for a week at a time. The TribLive reported on the new offerings, interviewing the staff member and volunteer behind the initiative. Any county resident, 18 or older, with a library card can get set up to check out tools from the library. Patrons can either browse the Tool Lending Library binders to find the tools they need, or they can also search tool availability through the online catalog. The tools range "from basic hand tools, like screwdrivers and wrenches, to gardening, automotive, masonry and power tools. We also have a great collection of bike tools."
- Camp Wood Public Library in Texas, announced their Artist of the Month, Travis Ward. Each month the library features a local artist's work on the walls of the library in an exhibit. The Facebook post shares the artist's biography, with rich local connections and history, and invites the community to come and enjoy the local talent. The library's been hosting an artist each month for a number of years, as indicated by this post from 2013 featuring local artist, Jenny W. Sutherland. "To be such a small community we are truly blessed to have so many talented people among us."
- Boulder Public Library in Colorado announced the opening of the Reynolds Branch Library's new Courtyard Garden. "We are growing herbs and vegetables (and happy librarians!)" BPL is not new to gardens however. Their Seed to Table efforts include a Seed Library, Library Beehives (be sure to check out photos on Instagram) and an Edible Learning Garden that supplies fresh produce to the Seeds Library Cafe, now in its third year. The menu consists of a rotating selection of sandwiches, salads and soups with a farm-to-table flair, with an emphasis on meat and produce from area farms.
- Logan County Public Library in Kentucky hosted Glow in the Dark Volleyball last week. Teens and tweens between 10-17 came in glow in the dark gear and had a ball!
