A bookmark contest, one library’s adventures with a MOOC, an outdoor bike repair station, digitized yearbooks and scholarships from library Friends are all highlighted in this edition of our Social Library series.These libraries are using Facebook to spread the word and engage with their communities. - Allen County Public Library in Indiana announced the 12 winners of their annual National Library Week Bookmark Contest. "We received so many amazing entries from artists of all ages...All winning entries were made into real bookmarks and are available at all 14 ACPL locations!" There are first and second place winners in six categories: 0-4 year old, 5-8 year old, 9-12 year old, 13-17 year old, Adult and Staff.
- Shelter Island Public Library in New York has been recognized for offering group viewings and discussions of Kadenze's free MOOC (massive open online course), the Modern Genius: Art and Culture in the 19th Century. Online courses are part of Shelter Island’s initiative to teach members how to use tech resources like MOOCs and develop technological literacy.
- Cullman County Public Library System in Alabama announced the installation of their Do-it-yourself bike repair station (at right). "The repair station includes a rack to hang a bike with tools for repair, as well as an air pump. We are encouraging people to commute to the library or anywhere by bicycle to promote eco-friendly travel. The library hopes to offer bicycle safety and repair programs in the near future."
- West Chicago Public Library District in Illinois announced that they completed the digitization of the West Chicago Community High School Yearbooks. Each of the yearbooks (from 1946-2012) is available as a searchable PDF.
- The Friends of the Library at Easton Area Public Library and District Center in Pennsylvania will award two $500 scholarships this year to graduating high school seniors. What a wonderful way to support local students! To learn more about the scholarship process, you can view the application here.
