Wikipedians Invited to Guide US Public Library Staff During Online Training Program

WebJunction /

The Wikipedia + Libraries: Better Together team is inviting experienced English-language Wikipedians to participate as Wikipedia guides in the continuing education online training program, which will run from September 13 – November 15, 2017. Interested Wikipedians can apply here.

The online course is part of the OCLC Wikipedia + Libraries project to build bridges between public libraries and Wikipedia. Up to 500 US public library staff may enroll. The training program will include six live online sessions, readings, activities, assignments, and utilize discussion forums as the central location for participants to share, ask questions, discuss their learning and make plans for using Wikipedia in their libraries.

In order to build human-to-human connections between libraries and English-language Wikipedia, Wikipedians are invited to guide and interact with course participants in the discussion forums.

Each Wikipedia volunteer guide will introduce themselves, answer questions, offer feedback and be on-hand to correct inaccuracies or misconceptions that participants may have about English-language Wikipedia’s policies, guidelines, history or other Wikimedia projects. Participation will take place in forum discussions between the live online sessions.

Volunteers may choose to participate for one training program module (2-3 weeks) or for the entire course, depending on their interest, availability and field of expertise. Wikipedian guides will be encouraged to observe the live online training sessions so they understand what the course participants are learning.
