Tackling Fake News (American Libraries)
In our role as gatekeepers of information, librarians have always been responsible for establishing the authority of information. But with social media ensuring that news articles—whether real or not—spread like wildfire, how can help our users filter the real from the fake? How can we maintain our professional obligation to ensure equal access to information in a politically charged time where it seems like not all information is created equal? In our next episode of American Libraries Live, you’ll have a chance to discuss these questions with our expert panel. We’ll discuss this and how we can move forward as a profession.

Understanding Risk Management for Nonprofit Organizations (Wayfind)
This session will focus on three areas: identifying and assessing organizational risk, financial risk management, and the Board’s role in risk management. In particular, the training will discuss how to identify and understand common areas of risk such as governance and oversight, contract, financial, regulatory compliance, physical and other injuries, reputational risks intellectual property, personnel management, and data security. It will also discuss what risks are transferable, through insurance or otherwise, and what risks are not, such as loss of funding. It will also explore how to mitigate risk by developing a mitigation and response plan, including prevention; training and emergency response; establishing reserves against loss; and the purchase of insurance. Finally, the session will delve into the Board of Director’s duties in ensuring a proper risk management plan is in place.

Reading the Future (Maine State Library)
What does the future of your organization look like? How will libraries, businesses, non-profits, and community organizations be impacted by technology? How will they communicate and what tools will be available to help them adapt in order to best suit their customers’ needs?  These were some of the questions posed at the second Library Futures Conference (the first was held back in 2007) Members of the Maine State Library, in partnership with the New Jersey State Library, were invited to attend the conference this year, and were treated to observations and discourses given by some of the premiere futurists in the fields of business, education and technology.  During this webinar, the conference attendees will share their own insights and interpretations – as applied to libraries – from this experience, and invite Maine librarians to ask their own questions about the rapidly changing future of libraries.

This session will cover some of the key dates that impact access to Florida government information (e.g., statehood in 1845, codification of Florida Statutes in 1941, state depository program in 1967, privatization of Dept of Commerce activities in 1996), bibliographies and finding tools, scattered locations of digitized collections, and a few highlights of unique and interesting content.

Update on the RDA 3R Project (Association for Library Collections and Technical Services)
The RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R) Project is a year-long effort to improve the RDA Toolkit in several different ways. Restructuring includes generalizing existing instructions where possible, implementing the four-fold path (unstructured description, structured description, identifiers, and actionable links) wherever applicable, and incorporating new elements from the IFLA Library Reference Model. Redesign includes greater flexibility in the display of instructions, improved user interaction with the Toolkit, and better tracking of revision history. Kathy Glennan, ALA Representative to the RDA Steering Committee, will bring attendees up-to-date about the planned changes to the Toolkit, which will be rolled out in April 2018.
