Can we rely on the sustainability of any of these federal resources in light of the prevailing mentality in Washington? Emily Mross12:22 PM Hi Paul, I share this concern! That's one of the reasons why the Financial Literacy Interest Group has started archiving CFPB resources through a LibGuide. At this time, things seem stable. I have also extensively checked CFPB links through the Waybackmachine, and they are archived there. At this time, there does not appear to be intereference with the FTC or SEC. Especially if the patron vehemently does not believe she is being scammed. Since it's a crime can we contact police, social services, etc. or are we still bound to protect privacy? Emily Mross12:24 PM I would consult with you library's legal representation before moving forward, but there may be options for involving law enforcement or the agency on aging, etc. But I would definitely consult with legal before taking action. Gregory12:21 PM I've had really similar issues. WebJunction Webinars12:21 PM The PAForward program: https://paforward.org/ Gregory12:22 PM Had a patron who thought she was being offered to marry a wealthy businessman in Dubai. I was told that doing anything more than recommending that she be careful was a violation of patron privacy. Allison Blakeman (she/her)12:23 PMEdited I have had the same thing happen with a patron thinking he was talking to a famous actor from Yellowstone. He was chatting with many different fan pages and "actor" pages claiming to be the actor and was messaging about sending one of the pages money (he had done it before) for something or another. He kept promising me he knew the person. Meagan12:23 PM Recently had someone get a phone call from a credit card saying suspicious activity on their card. Then they do a quick check of their other cards. Gasp you have a lot of red flags on all your accounts. We'll connect you with someone who can help you with this. Then the person is turned over to a company that will help get rid of all these suspicious charges - just provide card account info, bank info and sign an only power of attorney agreement. Then the cards are maxed out and money taken from the bank account with an authorized unsigned check. A BIG Mess!! cd12:24 PM Hello, will the slides or recording be sent to attendees? Stephanie Molnar12:24 PM They are online and in the link above. WebJunction Webinars12:24 PM You can see the slides for today's session here (with working links): https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/protect-older-adults-from-fraud.html Support12:24 PM This session is being recorded, and you will receive an email in the next 48 hours when the recording is available. Laura Roberts12:24 PM A coworker was just asking me what I thought about a scammy sounding situation with her college-aged son and his roommate, attempting to find housing and being told to give the "property manager" a $50 application fee and $500 damage deposit before they even saw the place. Emily Mross12:25 PM Yep, housing and job scams are really common, especially for younger people. Lynn will talk more about this. Support12:24 PM PDF of the slides on the event page: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/protect-older-adults-from-fraud.html Heidi R12:25 PM We are also state employees and required to report if we see child abuse. I wonder if this kind of scamming would count as elder abuse, and if we are required to report it? At the very least, it seems like we could call for a wellness check. In one case I know of, the friends and family had already called and tried to have it investigated, it was a sweetheart scam. Emily Mross12:26 PM I would check with your library's legal counsel before taking action, but yes, in some cases it may count as elder abuse that could/should be reported. Cynthia Hunt12:26 PM Your local Better Business Bureau is also great place to get speakers for scam programs Laura Roberts12:27 PM Your self-checkout kiosks allow advertising?! Mind blown! (Ours are reaaaaaally old) Wendy Sykes12:28 PM My dad gets scammed through malware on his computer about once a year :/ Devera C12:28 PM Kristi - I'd love a program file of this. We have a lot of older adults and it would be a spectacular program. Any way you can share that with us? Lindsey12:29 PM malware is a big issue at my library and email Emily Mross12:29 PM FTC has a number of resources about celebrity scams, romance scams, and avoiding malware Laura Roberts12:30 PM I always wonder who is using that Amazon service to let them into your garage. It seems super sketchy. Gregory12:31 PM I used to work at a toll booth and I have an old grudge against EZ pass for automating away that job. Seeing scams around it makes me feel like we really were a value add, ha ha. Laura Roberts12:32 PM I got a strange email from Amazon saying that an item I'd returned hadn't been received, and that they'd received some other object (a pair of men's shoes?!) instead. It sounded sketchy, so I got on a phone call with a rep who confirmed it was legit (?!) and also confirmed that they'd received my return. Good to double-check, if you're ever unsure! Cynthia Hunt12:33 PM How far in advance of the program did ou begin your promotion for it? Dan Smith12:33 PM I know some states Attorney Generals offices are great resources for crimes like this. Cynthia Hunt12:37 PM Excellent! Carrie12:37 PM We have had a fake business using our home address and they had lots of mail sent to that address. Business was out of Florida and had even gotten business from our Louisiana Secretary of State Laura H, Sacramento Public12:37 PM My mom and I have both been caught off-guard by charges on our bank statements that seemed to come out of nowhere, but they were just weeks old and hadn't been taken out of our accounts yet cd12:37 PM Thank you for all the information Brenda12:39 PM Can we get a copy of the disclaimer that you mentioned? I didn't see many people of color in the photos. Emily Mross12:49 PM It can really depend on your user population. I serve a diverse campus, and have very diverse representation at my sessions. Lindsey12:48 PM does it hurt your credit score? thanks :) Meagan12:48 PM I use both. Devera C12:49 PM Where do you order these from? I missed that Kay-Ann Miller12:50 PM I read about this one. Beth Ortiz12:50 PM I can see why fraud is so tempting to criminals! GeeZ! Gregory12:53 PM Waiting on that Butlerian Jihad to kick off any day now. Lena12:54 PM The grandparent scam was done to my in-laws. They cloned my sons voice and said he had a wreck and was in jail and his girlfriend was hurt in the hospital. Real enough to have us check the jails and hospitals, but weird sounding enough that it was questioned. RJ12:54 PM I am late--will I receive link to watch and slides? Lynn Bergendorff12:55 PM In the past I received job scams when apply to indeed.com and indeed respond that the post was a scam not a really post. Gregory12:56 PM That happened to me last time I was job hunting as well. IIRC they were done by former Indeed staff members that still had their employee credentials. Elizabeth Eagle12:55 PM Our BBB rep told us you have to renew your do-not-call status every 3 years Alison Nikitopoulos (she/her)12:56 PM National Do Not Call registry does not expire Neelam12:55 PM Can you give some examples of saying "yes" without saying "yes"?
