I'M EXCITED BECAUSE I THINK THIS WILL BE SOME REALLY GOOD INFORMATION FOR US TO ALL USE WHEN THIS SITUATION IS IN OUR REAR-VIEW MIRROR, BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS, SO I'M JUST GOING TO GO AHEAD AND START OUR SLIDES HERE. SO ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS HE I LIKE TO KIND OF STRESS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT COLLABORATION IS A LOT OF TIMES WE'RE KIND OF IN OUR OWN BUBBLE SO I ALWAYS LIKE TO STRESS THAT, LET'S COMMUNICATE, LET'S JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER. HOW CAN WE REALLY GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER. THERE IS ALWAYS THESE DIFFERENT STEREOTYPES OR WE GET IN OUR LITTLE BUBBLE AND WE DON'T WANT TO GET OUT. WE THINK WE KNOW WHAT THE OTHER PEOPLE ARE NEEDING OR THE RESOURCES THEY HAVE, ESPECIALLY EVEN IF IT IS IN YOUR OWN COMMUNITY. I KNOW FOR YEARS A LOT OF TEAMS WE WERE LIKE, WELL, THE SCHOOLS HAVE THAT, WE DON'T NEED TO DO THAT. AFTER A WHILE, WE ARE LIKE, WAIT A MINUTE, DO WE REALLY KNOW WHAT ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE DOING OR THEIR RESOURCES CHANGE JUST AS FAST, IF NOT FASTER THAN OURS AT A PUBLIC LIBRARY, SO THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT, FOR WHATEVER REASON IT, JUST KIND OF FELT LIKE A DAWNING MOMENT OF, MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST ASK THEM. SO WE DECIDED, LET'S JUST SIT DOWN AND LET'S START A CONVERSATION. COULD WE GO TO THE SCHOOL, CAN WE TALK TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN, THE ADMIN BE STRAIGHTERS, THE LITERACY TEACHERS. WHAT DO WE TALK TO AND WE, I MEAN, IN OUR LIBRARY IT WAS THE YOUTH SERVICES STAFF, SO OUR YOUTH SERVICES, WE HAVE A YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN AND SHE HAS ANOTHER FULL TIME STAFF MEMBER AS MANY PART TIMERS THAT HELP HER. SO THE FULL TIME YOUTH SERVICES STAFF AND DIRECTOR AND ME AS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, WE DECIDED WHAT RESOURCES DO WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, THAT WE THINK THE SCHOOLS WOULD FULFILL IN THEIR GAPS, BUT BEFORE, WE EASTERN DO THAT, WE THOUGHT, WE JUST NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ALL OF THEM. SO THE FIRST THING THAT WE DECIDED TO DO, AND IT HAS WORKED OUT SO WELL, WE REACHED OUT TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS. I KNOW A LOT OF DIFFERENT -- DEPEND WHAT IS SIZE YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT IS SOME PEOPLE HAVE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS IN EACH SCHOOL, AND WE'RE TALKING MOSTLY, PRIMARILY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL. BUT, WE ALSO WORKED IT OUT WITH THE HIGH SCHOOLS HERE. SO, WE DECIDED LET'S -- IN OUR DISTRICT, WE HAVE ONE DISTRICT LIBRARIAN, AND THEN WE HAVE PARAPROFESSIONALS IN ALL THE SCHOOLS, AND SO WE MET WITH HER AND WE JUST SAID, YOU KNOW, HOW COULD WE IMMEDIATE WITH YOUR ADMINISTRATION, COULD WE MEET WITH THEM? DO YOU WANT TO MEET WITH THEM? SHE SAID, KNOW WHAT, LET'S ALL GET TOGETHER VAN A CONVERSATION. AND SO WE DECIDED, HOW ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE COULD MEET WITH EVERYONE, AND ONE OF THE WAYS WAS WE DECIDED, LET'S HAVE KIND OF LIKE A, I SHOULD DO THE SLIDES HERE, SORRY ABOUT THAT. ONE OF THE WAYS WE THOUGHT THAT IT WOULDN'T FEEL LIKE SUCH AN ADMINISTRATIVE TYPE MEETING WAS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE'RE ALL SITTING BEHIND THESE DESKS, IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THERE'S BARRIERS TO OUR CONVERSATION, TO OUR COMMUNICATION. AND, FOR US, AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, WE FELT WE HAD A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A, I WOULD SAY A MORE OF A FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE WHERE WE COULD MEET ANY TIME AS LONG AS IT WASN'T DURING STORY TIME OR AFTER SCHOOL PROJECTS, THINGS LIKE THAT SO WE JUST ASKED, HEY, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS. IT WAS REALLY A NICE WAY TO BREAK DOWN THOSE BARRIERS, TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT RESOURCES THAT WE HAD AND ANOTHER WAY, AND THIS HAPPENS A LOT OF TIMES FOR US IN THE FALL, WE WOULD ASK COULD WE GET ON YOUR CALENDAR TO BE IN A TEACHER IN SERVICE DAY. SO THROUGHOUT, WHEN THE CALENDAR COMES OUT FOR NEWS SOUTH DAKOTA, COMES OUT ABOUT END OF JULY, AUGUST OF THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR, WE JUST SEE WHEN THEIR IN-SERVICES ARE AND WE CONTACT ADMINISTRATORS AND THE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS AND SAY COULD WE POSSIBLY JUST BE A PRESENTER OR A SPEAKER THAT DAY? JUST HAVE FIVE MINUTES OR IF YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES, IF YOU HAVE TWO HOURS, THAT'S FINE. WHAT DO YOU HAVE THAT A MOMENT THAT WE CAN COME IN AND TELL YOU, HEY, WE'RE HEAR FOR YOU. WE WANT TO SUPPORT YOU. SO I DO LIKE TO BRING LITTLE GIFTS TO PEOPLE LIKE THAT AND SAY, HEY, EVERY TIME YOU USE THIS, SOMEONE IS GOING TO SEE OUR LIBRARY BUT THIS IS A SPECIAL GIFT TO YOU, THANK YOU FOR GIVING US JUST A MOMENT TO SHARE OUR RESOURCES AND WHAT WE COULD DO AND ALSO FOR YOU TO TELL US HOW CAN WE HELP SUPPORT YOU. I THINK SO MANY TIMES, LIKE I SAID, WE KIND OF GET IN OUR OWN BUBBLE AND WE FORGET WHETHER YOU ARE A UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, SCHOOL LIBRARY, PUBLIC LIBRARY, WE ARE REALLY ALL ON THE SAME SIDE. WE'RE ON THE SAME TEAM, REALLY HAVE DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHICS MAYBE THAT WE SERVE AND WE HAVE SOME DIFFERENT GOALS. REALLY WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER SO IT REALLY HELPS TO BE ABLE TO MEET. SO ONE OF THE REALLY SUCCESSFUL THINGS FOR US IS IN THE FALL IS TO BE ABLE TO GET IN ON THEIR TEACHER'S MEETING OR EVEN A PTA MEETING THAT CAN REALLY HELP A LOT, TOO, BECAUSE THEN YOU ALSO GET THE FAMILY SUPPORT BEHIND IT. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF OUR HAND OUTS THAT WE HAVE GIVEN. DIFFERENT THINGS WE'VE DONE WHERE YOU CAN SEE OUR FALL PROGRAMMING, IT IS KIND OF AN OLDER ONE, BUT IT IS BASICALLY WE DO THE SEAM KIND OF EVERY YEAR, WE TRY TO PRINT UP A CART, SOMETIMES WE DO THINGS INDIVIDUALLY IT ALSO WILL ALWAYS SHOW EVERY PARTNERSHIP THAT WE HAVE. ROBOTICS CLASS, THE 4-H EXTENSIONS GROUP IN OUR YAY AREA DID A BIG ROBOTICS CLASS AND THAT WAS REALLY NICE. WHAT ONE OF THE TEACHERS PICKED UP ON WAS WE'RE TEACHING ROBOTICS IN ONE OF OUR TECHNOLOGY CLASSES SO THIS WILL BE ANOTHER EXTRA KIDS CAN KIND OF EXTEND THE LEARNING CURVE THERE, EXTEND THEIR EXPERIENCE A LITTLE BIT WITH THEIR DIFFERENT STEM PROJECTS. THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING A COUPLE OF OUR HANDOUTS, I MAKE THEM ALL MYSELF, BUT THROUGH THE USE OF FREE ONLINE PROGRAMS LIKE POSTERMYWALL, CANVA, PLACES LIKE THAT. SO THIS IS SOMETHING SOME OF OUR PROGRAMS AND SOME OF OUR SERVICES AND ESPECIALLY I WILL HAVE TO SAY OUR READING BUDDIES IS HUGE. AND THEY FILL UP ALL THE TIME AND IT HAS REALLY BEEN VERY GREAT, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE LITERACY AND SPEECH TEACHERS HAVE KIND OF COME ON BOARD WITH THAT AND THEY SEEM TO REALLY BE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THAT. AND, AS SOON AS IT, SEEMS LIKE AS SOON AS THE TEACHERS ARE SUPPORTIVE, THEN -- SORRY ABOUT THAT IT SEEMS LIKE PROGRAMS JUST KIND OF GO CRAZY. WE ALWAYS HAVE A SCHOOL DISCLAIMER, THAT WAS THE ONE THING THAT OUR CITY ATTORNEY AND ALSO THE ATTORNEY FOR THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT IN OUR AREA SAID, OH THERE NEEDS TO BE A DISCLAIMER. THERE ARE OTHER PLACES LIKE OUR PARKS AND REC AND THINGS LIKE THAT, THEY DON'T HAVE THAT ALLOWANCE IN OUR AREA, SO, YOU KNOW, IT IS ALWAYS WISE TO TALK TO THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS BECAUSE THEY KNOW FOR SURE WHO CAN COME INTO THE SCHOOL, WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES WHEN YOU COME INTO THE SCHOOL, WHAT IS NEEDED AND THINGS LIKE THAT. SO, FOR US, EVERYTHING THAT WE PRINT THAT GOES TO THE SCHOOL, WE ARE ABLE TO DO OUR SUMMER READING PROGRAM FLIERS AND WE HAND OUT, YOU KNOW, THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF THEM. WE ARE ALL TRYING TO MAKE IT STRETCH AS FAR AS WE CAN, SO WHAT WE HAVE FOUND IS SOMETIMES WITH SCHOOLS AND WITH PUBLIC LIBRARIES, WE DUPLICATED SERVICES THAT COULD BE MONEY THAT GOES FOR SOMETHING ELSE, MAYBE DIFFERENT DATABASE OR, YOU KNOW, MORE MATERIALS AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT SO WHEN WE DUPLICATE SERVICE IT IS DOESN'T REALLY HELP EITHER ONE OF US. ESPECIALLY LIKE WITH PUBLIC LIBRARIES, THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE CAN OFFER, THE SCHOOLS GET GRANT MONEY AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT SOMETIMES, AND FOR THEIR ONLINE LEARNING AND THEIR DATABASES, BUT THERE IS ALSO OTHER THINGS THAT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY WOULD HAVE, AS WELL. SO FOR US IN THIS AREA, WE HAVE ANCESTRY, SELECT READS. WE HAVE ANASTIA ACAD AMERICA REALLY GOOD FOR HELP WITH TECHNOLOGY OR MATH. WE ALWAYS HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION TO TUMBLEBOOKS, BUT THAT IS FREE RIGHT FOR EVERYBODY. THAT IS REALLY HELPFUL. A LOT OF OUR TEACHERS USE THAT AND IT HELPS WITH SUPPLEMENTAL FOR THE CURRICULUM. ONE OF OUR BIGGEST RESOURCES THE TEACHERS HAVE TOLD US IS THE TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS, ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW, YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING IS VERY TECHNOLOGY, ONLINE BASED AND THERE IS STILL A HUGE DIGITAL DIVIDE. THERE ARE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY, FOR SURE WHO TO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET, MAYBE DON'T HAVE THE DEVICES AT HOME, MAYBE EVERYTHING IS JUST ON THE PHONE, THEY DON'T HAVE DESK TOP COMPUTERS OR, YOU KNOW, LAPTOPS AND THINGS LIKE THAT, SO THAT IS A LOT OF THINGS THAT US, AS A PUBLIC LIBRARY, WE HAVE THAT. WE HAVE THE SPACE. WE ALSO HAVE WHERE WE HAVE HOT SPOTS. THAT'S BEEN A VERY BIG THING, EXCUSE THE PUNT, BUT A HOT TOPIC FOR US IS OUR HOT SPOTS. WE HAVE SOME PEOPLE IN RURAL AREAS AND IT IS VERY COSTLY TO HAVE THE INTERNET AND THEY'RE JUST NOT ABLE TO HAVE THAT. SO WE HAVE HOT SPOTS WHERE THEY CAN CHECK THEM OUT AND, FOR TWO WEEKS AT A TIME THIS HAS BEEN REALLY HUGE TO HELP PEOPLE SO THEY CAN HAVE INTERNET ACCESS, GET THEIR SCHOOL WORK DONE, DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT. WE ALSO HAVE SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T REALLY EVER THINK ABOUT BECAUSE OF, I GUESS, EVERYONE HAS KIND OF THEIR OWN COLLECTION THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DEVELOP AND THINGS LIKE THAT. ONE THING, WHEN WE WERE AT IN SERVICE DAY WITH THE TEACHERS I REMEMBER ONE TIME I WAS TALKING TO MIDDLE SCHOOLTEACHERS AND I WAS TELLING THEM ABOUT ALL THE THINGS AND THERE IS BOOKS THAT ARE REALLY HARD FOR THEM TO HAVE ON THE SHELVES WITHOUT THEM BEING KIND OF CRITICIZED OR SOMETIMES SUBJECT TO BACKING AND THINGS LIKE. THAT SOME OF THE BANNED BOOKS AND THINGS IS SOMETHING THAT A PUBLIC LIBRARY CAN GET AWAY WITH IN A DIFFERENT SETTING SO A LOT OF TIMES WE ALSO HAVE PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS IN OUR AREA, SOME OTHER PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND THEY LOOK TOWARDS US TO BE PURCHASING THOSE BOOKS THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE. ALSO, FOR INSTANCE, MANY OF THE TEACHERS IN THIS AREA, IF THEY'RE GOING THROUGH A CERTAIN SUBJECT, A CERTAIN PART OF THEIR CURRICULUM FOR INSTANCE, ONE TEACHER IS KIND OF FAMOUS FOR HAVING A WHOLE SECTION ON SPIDERS AND DIFFERENT THINGS. I BET WE HAVE 30 BOOKS ON SPIDERS SO WE ALWAYS PULL A LOT OF BOOKS FOR HER SO SHE CAN HAVE THEM IN HER CLASSROOM FOR THAT WHOLE UNIT SO WHEN THEY'RE DONE WITH THEM, WHAT'S HAPPENWHEN THEY GET DONE WITH THEM, A LOT OF TIMES IN SUMMER THEY WANT TO READ, CHECK THEM OUT HERE WHEN THEY COME TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. THAT'S GOOD, TOO. FOR THE LIBRARIES AT THE SCHOOL, LITERACY TEACHERS, IF THEY CAN TELL YOU WHAT DIFFERENT THINGS THEY'RE GOING TO BE COVERING IN YOUR CURRICULUM AND THE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS ARE JUST, I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH IN MY BUDGET TO BUY THE 10 MORE BOOKS I REALLY, REALLY WANT TO BUY THESE KIDS WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE, MAYBE THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IS LIKE, WE WILL BUY THOSE SO THEY ARE AVAILABLE, SCHOOL LIBRARIAN SAID, OKAY, IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS, THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE GOING OVER TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND THAT WAY, YOU KNOW, WE'VE KIND OF SHARED RESOURCES IT. ALSO HELPS THE PUBLIC LIBRARY ENHANCE THEIR COLLECTION BECAUSE IT IS GOING TO MIRROR YOUR COMMUNITY. WE ALWAYS SAY AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, IT IS LITERALLY THE PUBLIC'S LIBRARY, SO WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING BOOKS AND THE PUBLIC IS TELLING US WHAT THEY WANT TO READ AND WHAT THEY'RE INTERESTED IN, IT REALLY DOES REFLECT YOUR ACTUALLY COMMUNITY SO THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO ENHANCE YOUR COLLECTIONS. WE ALSO HAVE SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL. EVERYTHING IS STEM. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. BUT THERE IS, AGAIN, EVERYBODY HAS A TIGHT BUDGET AND SCHOOLS, EVERYBODY, AND SO IT IS REALLY NICE FOR US, WHEN WE WENT TO BE, WE WERE GOING TO BE BUYING STEM KITS FOR OUR CHILDREN'S AREA, OUR YOUTH SERVICES AREA, WE WERE LIKE, WELL, WHICH ONES WOULD KIND OF ENHANCER WHAT THE KIDS ARE ALREADY LESHING IN SCHOOL. THE DIFFERENT ROBOTICS AND DIFFERENT THINGS WITH TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT RESOURCE TO TALK TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS AND SOME OF THE TEACHERS AND SAY, HEY WHAT ARE YOU OFFERING? WHAT IS YOUR CURRICULUM AND WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? SOME OF THEM ALREADY KNEW THAT SOME OF THOSE, YOU KNOW, MAYBE CHEAPER STEM KITS WERE WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO GET. YOU WERE GOING TO GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR, SO WE KIND OF STEERED AWAY FROM SOME OF THOSE. AND, SO WE HAVE STEM KITS THAT PEOPLE CAN CHECK OUT IN THE CHILDREN'S AREA, THEY PUT THEM TOGETHER THERE AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND SO WE TRY TO KIND OF GO OFF WHAT THE SCHOOLS ARE DOING, AS WELL. PLUS, IF THERE IS GOING TO BE DOING A BIG UNIT ON LEGOS AND BUILDING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER, THAT IS WHERE WE WOULD HAVE OUR LEGO COMPETITION, SO AFTER THEY WENT THROUGH SOME OF THESE UNITS IN THEIR SCHOOL, WE WOULD HOLD A LEGO COMPETITION BECAUSE THEY ALREADY KIND OF HAD THAT EXPERIENCE AND IT JUST HELPS THE KIDS KIND DEFENSIVE THAT MUCH FURTHER WE ARE THEIR EDUCATION. SO MANY TIMES THE TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS ARE TELLING US, YOU KNOW, IF THEY'RE NOT GETTING THE SUPPORT AT HOME, IT MAKES OUR JOB FIVE TIMES WORSE. SO WE REALLY TRY TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES TO COME TOGETHER AND TO ENGAGE IN SOME OF OUR PROGRAMS, OUR CULTURAL EVENTS AND EVERYTHING FOR FREE. SO MANY TIMES, YOU KNOW, A CHARGE IS ANOTHER BARRIER, IT IS JUST ANOTHER WALL FOR PEOPLE, AND WE HAVE HAD TO CHARGE A FEW TIMES WHAT WE'VE DONE SOME ART PROGRAMMING AND THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT IT WAS FOR THE MATERIALS THAT THEY GOT TAKE HOME. AND, USUALLY, PROBABLY DIDN'T EVEN COVER THE MATERIALS THAT THEY HAD BUT IT WOULD HELP SUPPLEMENT THE COST OF IT A LITTLE BIT. AND IT DIDN'T SEEM TO REALLY HELP OR HURT, IT DIDN'T REALLY SEEM TO HURT OUR PARTICIPATION BUT OUR COST WAS LIKE MAYBE FIVE DOLLARS. AND RIGHT HERE WE ALWAYS TRY TO DO EXHIBITS FOR SOME REASON WHEN WE WERE VERY LUCKY TWO YEARS AGO, WE HAD A BRAND NEW LIBRARY AND IT IS AMAZING, I'M NOT GOING TO LIE, AND IT IS SO GREAT BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF SPACE AND HUGE ENTRANCE HALLS, AND SO ONE OF OUR BIGGEST THINGS THAT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES LOVE HERE ARE EXHIBITS, SO I TRY TO GET EXHIBITS THAT KIND OF GO ALONG WITH SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON AT THE SCHOOLS SO THAT HELPED A LOT AND THE TEACHERS AND EVERYTHING LIKE TO SAY HEY, FOR SOMETHING EXTRA TO DO, YOU COULD GO TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND SEE THIS BIG WEATHER EXHIBIT ABOUT WEATHER IN OUR AREA AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT. WE'VE HAD SOME HISTORY, TRAVELING EXHIBITS THAT HAVE COME THROUGH AND THINGS LIKE THAT. WE ALSO HELD, USUALLY ALWAYS HOLD HOW-TO FEST. THIS IS SOMETHING WHERE PEOPLE CAN COME TOGETHER AND LEARN ALL DIFFERENT TYPES OF THINGS AND TRY IT ONCE. KIND OF TRY IT HERE, HEY, MAYBE WE ARE INTERESTED AS A FAMILY TO DO ARCHERY OR BEE KEEPING OR PLANT A GARDEN OR WHATEVER IT MAY BE. SO THAT IS SOME OF OUR MAYBE A LITTLE BIT MORE SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS THAT ALSO THE SCHOOLS WILL HELP PROMOTE. AND HERE, AGAIN, IS MORE FAMILY PROGRAMMING AND CULTURAL EVENTS THAT WE HAVE HERE AT THE LIBRARY. LIKE I SAID, THE REFUGEE EXHIBIT FOR MINNESOTA, THAT IS A TRAVELING EXHIBIT, IT IS ONE PROBABLY OUR MOST ATTENDED EXHIBIT THAT WE HAVE HAD. IT WAS AMAZING. I RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYBODY AND IT IS VERY EASY TO USE, EASY TO PUT UP, AND WE'VE GOTTEN GRANT FOR IT TO PAY FOR IT. AND, IT ALSO HAPPENED, TOO, WE JUST HAD AN EVENT THAT ACTUALLY CAME ACROSS, WHAT WAS INTERESTING FOR US WAS, THE SCHOOLS HAD ALWAYS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING WITH OUR SOMALIAN COMMUNITY. WE HAVE, I WOULD SAY, A LARGE SOMALIAN COMMUNITY, A PRETTY GOOD SIZED ONE AND THEY ALWAYS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING SO PEOPLE, EVERYBODY COULD INTERACT AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER. THE LIBRARY, WE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THAT, AS WELL. WHAT IS INTERESTING ENOUGH IS, THE SCHOOLS WERE LIKE, WELL, YOU KNOW, I GUESS IN YOUR AREA, THE POLICE ARE REALLY KIND OF THAT MIDDLEMAN THAT THEY KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE SOMALIAN COMMUNITY IN A GOOD WAY, AND THEY'RE KIND OF THE LIAISON. BUT THE SCHOOLS WERE KIND OF HESITANT TO BE WORKING WITH THE POLICE, I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHY WE ARE A CITY ENTITY AND WE SAID, HEY, YOU COULD GET US IN TOUCH WITH SOME PEOPLE IN THE SOMALIAN COMMUNITY THAT WE COULD TALK ABOUT HAVING AN EVENT, A HUGE COMMUNITY MEET AND GREET, AND WE WOULD ALL KIND OF COME TOGETHER WITH THAT. AND IT WAS GREAT SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE LEARNED AS A LIBRARY IS ONE OF OUR RESOURCES IS WE ARE ABLE TO MAYBE WORK WITH SOME OTHER COMMUNITY ENTITIES AND LITTLE EASIER THAN IT IS MAYBE YOUR SCHOOL DIRECT, FOR WHATEVER GUIDELINES OR DIFFERENT THINGS, IT WAS A LITTLE EASIER TO COME TOGETHER AND WE WERE THE MIDDLE AMERICAN WHAT WAS NICE IS WE PROVIDED THE SPACE. WE WILL COORDINATE THIS AND PROVIDE THE SPACE AND SCHOOLS SAID WE WILL PROMOTE IT WITHIN THE SCHOOLS, A FEW OTHER ENTITIES DID, AS WELL, AND IT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. AND, THEN, THOSE SPEAKERS, THE SCHOOL TELLS US WHO THEY ARE, WE CONTACT THOSE SPEAKERS AND SAY, HEY, WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO ANOTHER PROGRAM AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR US? AND, AT NIGHT, FOR THE REST OF THE FAMILY OR FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO MAYBE AREN'T IN THOSE SCHOOLS. AND THOSE PEOPLE USUALLY GIVE US A VERY CUT RATE BECAUSE IT IS AN EXTRA PROGRAM FOR THEM, SO LET'S SAY THEY'RE CHARGING, I DON'T KNOW, LIKE $500 OR A THOUSAND DOLLARS TO COME TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND MAYBE THEY WILL CHARGE US 200 OR WHATEVER TO DO SOME PROGRAMS AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, SO THAT IS JUST KIND OF AN EXAMPLE OF A RACKED CARD THAT WE HAD IT WAS REALLY SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM. SO WE DECIDED WE WOULD HAVE A STEM DAY AND WE COULD HAVE IT AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY BECAUSE, FOR ONE THING, WE HAD EXTRA STAFF THAT WE COULD PULL FROM OTHER AREAS AND WE HAD STAFF THAT COULD HELP, WE HAD THE MEETING SPACE. WE HAD THE SPACE NEEDED, AND THE TEACHERS SAID, HEY, WE HAVE THE BUDGET FOR FIELD TRIPS SO I KNOW WE CAN GET THE BUSES FROM THE SCHOOL, THE KIDS BECAUSED FROM SCHOOLS DO -- BUSED FROM SCHOOLS, FIELD TRIPS. PICK AN AGE THAT IS MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND LET'S TRY IT OUT. THAT'S WHAT WE DID. THEY DECIDED THAT EVERY THIRD GRADER IN ABERDEEN IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL, THEY CAME THROUGH OUR LIBRARY. SO IT WAS REALLY THREE DAYS OF STEM KITS THAT THE KIDS CAME THROUGH. HOW WE DID IT IS WE HAVE SIX ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, WHICH ARE THREE FULL CLASSES OF THIRD GRADERS, AND WE BROKE THE KIDS INTO GROUPS SO EACH CLASS, WHEN THEY CAME THROUGH, WERE IN GROUPS OF ABOUT SIX TO EIGHT KIDS. ONE SCHOOL WOULD COME IN TO THE LIBRARY IN THE MORNING, THEY WOULD BE BUSED THERE FROM THE SCHOOL ABOUT 8:30 IN THE MORNING, AND THEY WERE HERE UNTIL 11:30. THE NEXT SCHOOL WOULD COME IN AT NOON AND THEY WERE HERE UNTIL 3:00 AND OF COURSE BUSED BACK TO THEIR ORIGINAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE SET UP AND GOT READY FOR THE NEXT DAY. EACH GROUP OF THESE KIDS, THEY ROTATED BETWEEN ALL THE STEM KITS. THEY WERE THERE FOR ABOUT 25 MINUTES PER KIT. AND SO WE HAD THREE DAYS OF STEM AND IT SOUNDS KEYYOTIC AND CRAZY BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY ORGANIZED BECAUSE THERE WERE TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS INVOLVED, SO IT IS GOING TO BE SUPER ORGANIZED. IT WAS REALLY GREAT. WE HAD A LIST OF THE STEM KITS AVAILABLE. BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, IT WAS PROBABLY EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE IT HAPPENED, WE TOOK TO TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN, SHE WENT THROUGH TO ALL THE TEACHERS, THIRD GRADE TEACHERS, AND SAID WHAT ARE YOUR TOP EIGHT KITS. THEY PICK ALL THE ONES THAT THEY HAD, THEY WERE GOING THROUGH WITH THEIR CURRICULUM, EVERYTHING THAT HAD MATCHED. SO FROM THERE, WE ORDERED THEM, THEY WERE SENT TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED WAS IN THE KIT. ING ON OBVIOUSLY THERE WAS TIMES WE HAD TO SUPPLEMENT THE WATER AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT. THEY ALSO, BECAUSE THEY HAD SCIENCE MUSEUMS TRAVELING, THEY MIGHT CALL THEM TRAVELING STEM EXHIBITS OR STEM KITS, BUT THERE'S OTHER STATES THAT HAVE THEM AND THEY PROBABLY CHARGED FOR THEM. OURS WOULD HAVE CHARGED BUT I THINK THEY WERE KIND OF DESPERATE TO GET THE WORD OUT SO THIS FIRST PILOT PROGRAM, THEY SENT THEM TO US FOR FREE. WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE SHIPPING BACK AND THEY'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STATE, IT WASN'T TOUTIERABLEY EXPENSIVE BUT IT WAS SO -- IT WASN'T TOO TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT. THE STATE DECIDED TO SPEND THE PROGRAMMING NOUN PAY FOR THE SHIPPING OF MATERIALS, THEN THE SCHOOLS, THEY PAID FOR BUSES TO GET THE KIDS HERE AND USED IT AS A FIELD TRIP DAY. HERE YOU SEE THE PICTURES, WE HAD A BUBBLE KIT. IT WAS A BUBBLE SCIENCE, AND GEOMETRY KITS AND BUILDER KITS AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT. HERE IS SOME REALLY GREAT PICTURES OF THE KIDS. EVERY ONE OF US, EVERY ONE OF THEKETS WE HAD, YOU KNOW, EITHER LIBRARIANS OR A FEW -- WELL, THERE WERE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS AND PUBLIC LIBRARIANS, SO WE HAD THE SAME KIT THAT WE DID OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. MINE WAS THE MAGNIFYING GLAD, WE LOOKED AT SAND AND MADE FINGERPRINTS AND ALL THOSE WONDERFUL THINGS OVER AND OVER FOR A WEEK. BUT, ANYWAY, HERE IS WHERE THEY DID ELECTRICITY, THE DIFFERENT CIRCUITS, THEY LEARNED ABOUT ALL THAT. THEY ALSO DID THING WITH THE TERRARIUM. THEY HAD A REALLY GOOD TIME. A LOT OF THEM, IT WAS JUST RIGHT ON, WE WERE VERY LUCKY THAT THESE CERTAIN KITS AT THAT AGE GROUP, WE PICKED KIND OF THE PERFECT ONE SO THE TEACHERS REALLY KNEW, THIS IS THE CURRICULUM WE'RE KIND OF TEACHING RIGHT NOW SO THE KIDS WILL BE REALLY IN TUNED TO IT AND REALLY ON BOARD. THEY HAD CONSTRUCTION, HERE IN SOUTH DAKOTA, TRACKING SOMETHING. AN ANIMAL, ANIMAL TRACKS THAT IS, YOU KNOW, PRETTY GOOD SCIENCE RIGHT THERE THEY'RE PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THAT SO THIS IS JUST THE DIFFERENT LIBRARIANS WHO HAD BEEN HELPING. WHAT WE ALSO HAD WAS KIND OF LIKE A TEACHER'S LOUNGE BECAUSE THE THIRD GRADE TEACHERS WERE HERE WALKING AROUND WITH THEM, THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO REALLY DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN KIND OF KEEP THEIR KIDS UNDER CONTROL, WHICH WAS NOT AN ISSUE AT ALL. THE STEM KITS WERE SO ENGAGING. LIKE I SAID, IT WAS 25 MINUTES, SO IT'S JUST KIDS CAME IN, WE TOLD THEM WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO AND SHOWED THEM A FEW THINGS, GOT THEM USING THEKET. BY THAT POINT, THEY'RE MOVED ON TO ANOTHER KIT SO WE HAD A TEACHER'S LOUNGE WE HAD SET UP WITH FANCY COFFEES AND WATER AND SOME, YOU KNOW, POP, SODA, DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT SNACKS THROUGHOUT THE DAY. AND THIS WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE TEACHERS TO SEE THE KIDS INTERACTING WITH THESE STEM KITS. AND WE ONLY DID A SMALL PORTION OF THE KIT BECAUSE THESE STEM KITS WERE SOMETHING FOR A WHOLE UNIT THAT A TEACH CORE HAVE IN HER CLASSROOM. -- COULD HAVE IN HER CLASSROOM. FOR INSTANCE, WITH THE SAND THERE WAS PROBABLY 12 OTHER ACTIVITIES WE COULD DO, BUT WE DID TWO OR THREE, DEPENDING ON THE KIDS HOURS QUICKLY THEY PICKED THINGS UP. THAT WAS REALLY GREAT. FOR US, WE HAVE A SMALLER POPULATION HERE. WE HAD 408 KIDS COME THROUGH THE LIBRARY IN THREE DAYS, AND IT WAS SO MUCH F FUNDAMENTAL. IT WAS REALLY, WE FELT -- IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. IT WAS REALLY, WE FELT EXCITED FOR THE TEACHERS, FOR THE CLASSROOM KITS. THEY'RE EXCITED TO USE THEM NEXT YEAR, WHEN THEY GET BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS, HOPEFULLY. A LOT OF THEM SAID HOW LONG CAN I USE IT AND GOING TO BE ABLE TO HOPEFULLY PUT IT IN THEIR BUDGET. A LOT OF TIMES, FOR US, WE DID FIND OUT THAT THE DISCOVERY CENTER WAS NOT GOING TO CHARGE FOR THE ACTUAL USE OF THE STEM KIT, SO THAT WAS REALLY NICE. AND SO THOSE ARE LIKE ATHLETE PARTNERSHIPS THAT CAME TOGETHER THAT I THINK NOW, THE TEACHERS, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT UNDERSTANDS LIT MORE -- A LITTLE MORE WHAT THEY CAN DO, AND IT GAVE THE DISCOVERY CENTER A REAL INSIGHT OF WHAT IS NEEDED IN THE SCHOOLS AND HOW TO HELP THEM. AND SO, THAT KIND OF HELPED BE SOMETHING THAT WAS KIND OF A NICE CHALLENGE FOR US. WE WERE EXHAUSTED BECAUSE I'M NOT USED TO BEING AROUND THIRD GRADERS. IT TAKES A DIFFERENT SET OF SKILLS, RIGHT? >> YES, IT DOES. >> I HAD A BLAST BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS THREE DAYS BUT IT WAS EXHAUSTING AND FUN. LET ME JUST ASK YOU SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT CAME UP ABOUT THE STEM PROGRAM. JUST TO CONFIRM THE KITS WERE PROVIDED BY THE SOUTH DAKOTA DISCOVERY CENTER, SO THAT WAS GREAT THAT THEY ALREADY HAD THEM. PEOPLE ARE BRAINSTORMING IDEAS OF HOW TO FIND CONNECTIONS. I WOULD DEFINITELY ENCOURAGE FOLKS, SOMEBODY SUBJECTED FINDING FUNDING FOR KITS. REACH OUT TO THE STATE LIBRARY AGENCIES OR STATE EDUCATOR ENTITIES TO FIND OUT. MANY OF YOU ARE SAYING THERE MAY BE KITS SOMEWHERE OUT THERE THAT YOU CAN BECOME INVOLVED WITH. >> ONE THING WE'VE FOUND OUT FOR FUNDING TO BUY STEM KITS IS, IF YOU HAVE A MANUFACTURING TYPE OF A COMPANY IN YOUR AREA, WE HAVE 3M WHICH IS VERY POPULAR RIGHT NOW, AND THEY'RE WORKING OVER TIME AND TRIPLE TIME. IT'S BEEN CRAZY. BUT 3M GAVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO A GRANT. THEY DON'T GIVE IT TO US ALL THE TIME BUT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR GRANTS FOR STEM MATERIALS AND FOR PROGRAMMING AND THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT OTHER PLACES THAT HAVE DIFFERENT, YOU KNOW, COMPANIES THAT ARE IN YOUR TOWN AND THEY REALLY WANT TO MAYBE SUPPORT SOMETHING JUST IN THEIR TOWN, I THINK THAT WOULD REALLY HELP, TOO. I KNOW I HAD KIND OF TALKED ABOUT THIS TOO, ANOTHER LIBRARY FRIEND OF MINE, THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT WITH THE STEP KITS THEY ALREADY HAD AT THE LIBRARY THAT THEY WOULD CHECK OUT WITH, SO YOU CAN DO IT THAT WAY, TOO. SO SOME QUICK QUESTIONS QUESTIONS DID SCHOOL PAY FOR THEIR OWN BUS OF THE THIRD GRADERS. >> YES, THEY DID. AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN WE DID THE MULTICULTURAL, THE MEET AND GREET. NOW A LOT OF OUR SOMALIAN COMMUNITY, THEY WEREN'T -- THEY WERE MORE FAMILIAR COME IN HERE. THEY RECOGNIZED US MORE SO THEY CAME IN AND GOT THEIR CARDS AND BROUGHT THE FAMILY IN AND CAME TO OTHER EVENTS SO THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD THING, TOO. >> THAT'S FANTASTIC.
