I DO SEE A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISCOVERY AND OUTREACH, BECAUSE I SEE OUTREACH MOST OFTEN USED IN TERMS OF REACHING OUT TO NEW USERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY ABOUT EXISTING LIBRARY PROGRAMS THAT MIGHT BENEFIT THEM. SO DISCOVERY IS SEEKING A COMPLETELY FRESH VIEW OF WHO YOUR COMMUNITY IS AND IT SHIFTS THE CONVERSATION FROM WHAT THE LIBRARY CAN DO FOR YOUR COMMUNITY TO WHAT WE CAN DO WITH THEM. SO IT'S AN INITIAL STAGE OF A DESIGN THINKING PROCESS. I KNOW DESIGN THINKING IS A POPULAR TOPIC ON THE PURVIEW OF MANY THESE DAYS. SO THIS DISCOVERY IS AN INITIAL PHASE BECAUSE FOR DESIGN THINKING TO WORK EFFECTIVELY, IT REALLY STARTS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO DESIGN WITH, UNDERSTANDING THEM WELL ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN REALLY EMPATHIZE WITH THEIR SITUATIONS AND THINK MORE FRESHLY AND CREATIVELY ABOUT WORKING WITH THEM. THE COMMUNITY IS THE EXPERT. THIS IS KIND OF A MANTRA, A BASELINE. IT'S REALLY ABOUT LISTENING AND LEARNING WHAT'S MEANINGFUL TO PEOPLE. WHAT THEIR ASPIRATIONS ARE. AND ALSO WHAT MAYBE IS GETTING IN THE WAY OF THEM ACHIEVING THOSE ASPIRATIONS AND THAT SUCCESS. SO IT MAY BEGIN WITH THE COMMUNITY EXPERT, BUT THERE'S REALLY NO POINT WHERE YOU AS A LIBRARY CAN SAY, OKAY, I'M DONE WITH CONNECTING WITH MY COMMUNITY, IT'S A CONTINUING PROCESS. IT LEADS AND FEEDS INTO COLLABORATING WITH THE COMMUNITY, SO YOU START BY COLLABORATING AND UNDERSTANDING WHO THEY ARE, WHAT THEY ASPIRE TO, AND THEN IT CONTINUES INTO POTENTIAL COLLABORATIONS AROUND DESIGNING PHYSICAL SPACE, CONSTRUCTING THE PHYSICAL SPACE, PLANNING, AND DESIGNING AND DELIVERING SERVICES AND PROGRAMMING. SO IT IS A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP, THIS COMMUNITY DISCOVERY. AND THE IMPACT, THE REALLY POSITIVE IMPACT IS THAT A COMMUNITY THAT FEELS INVITED TO BE INTEGRAL TO THE PROCESS IS A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO ARE INVESTED IN THE SUCCESS, IN THE LONG-TERM SUCCESS OF THE LIBRARY. SO THIS ENGAGEMENT WITH PEOPLE DIRECTLY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE PERSON-TO-PERSON RELATIONSHIPS. AND IT CAN BE VERY SURPRISING. WE START WITH THE COMMUNITY IS THE EXPERT. THE EXPERT DOESN'T NECESSARILY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT, OR WHAT VALUES WILL SURFACE. SO THROUGH THIS PROCESS, THINGS CAN EMERGE THAT SURPRISE BOTH THE LIBRARY AS THE INVESTIGATOR, AND THE PERSON AND PEOPLE IN COMMUNITY YOU'RE WORKING WITH TO GET THOSE UNANTICIPATED INSIGHTS. AND THAT'S SOME OF THE REAL GOLD THAT COMES OUT OF THIS. SO IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO GO INTO THIS PROCESS WITHOUT PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS ABOUT WHAT THE LIBRARY CAN DO, WHAT THE COMMUNITY WANTS, JUST REALLY KIND OF TRY TO HOLD BACK ANY PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS AS YOU EMBARK ON A COMMUNITY DISCOVERY PROCESS. SO OUR -- MY OBSERVATIONS, OUR WEBJUNCTION OBSERVATIONS ABOUT COMMUNITY DISCOVERY REALLY COME FROM THE SMALL LIBRARIES CREATE SMART SPACES PROJECT. SO WE'RE LOOKING AT IT THROUGH THAT LENS. THIS WAS A PROJECT THAT INITIALLY IN 2017-2018 WORKED WITH 15 SMALL AND RURAL LIBRARIES, THEY WERE GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTRIBUTED AROUND THE COUNTRY. WE HAD A GRANT FUNDING FROM THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES, AND OUR ONGOING SUPPORT FROM OCLC TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE ALONG WITH PARTNERS IN ARSL AND PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES, AND THAT WAS A PROJECT WORKING WITH THESE LIBRARIES TO REENVISION AND ACTIVATE THEIR PHYSICAL SPACES FOR LEARNING. SO BASED ON THOSE SUCCESSES THAT PROJECT, WE ACTUALLY RECEIVED SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING FROM IMLS TO WORK WITH YET ANOTHER COHORT, WE JUST LAUNCHED EARLIER THIS YEAR WE'RE JUST EMBARKING IN THE FOURTH MONTH WITH 15 ADDITIONAL LIBRARIES, AND JUST TO GIVE YOU A VISUAL OF HOW THEY'RE DISTRIBUTED AROUND THE COUNTRY, THE GREEN STATES ARE THE -- WHAT WE CALL ROUND ONE PARTICIPANTS, ORANGE STATES ARE ROUND TWO, AND THE THREE STATES, MINNESOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, AND TEXAS THAT ARE THAT BLEND OF GREEN AND ORANGE, THOSE STATES HAVE A LIBRARY IN EACH OF THE ROUNDS. SO DESIGN THINKING BEGINS WITH WHAT THEY CALL A DESIGN CHALLENGE. IT'S THIS FIRST STEP THAT REALLY HELPS TO FOCUS THE QUESTIONING AND THE LISTENING SO IF YOU FRAME YOUR DISCOVERY AROUND A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE AND/OR PARTICULAR AUDIENCE, IT KIND OF -- IT HELPS FOCUS HOW YOU THEN APPROACH THE COMMUNITY. IT'S NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, BUT IT'S A SUGGESTION FROM THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS. AND THEY REALLY LIKE THIS FRAMING OF HOW MIGHT WE. BUT THERE ARE SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR FRAMING AND DESIGN CHALLENGE, AND IN THAT LINK THAT WAS JUST POSTED YOU WILL GET TO THE DESIGN THINKING FOR LIBRARIES TOOL KIT, WHICH WILL GIVE YOU MORE DETAIL IF YOU LOOK IN THE INSPIRATION SECTION MORE DETAIL ABOUT FRAMING DESIGN CHALLENGE, BUT JUST BASICALLY THERE ARE SUGGESTIONS FOR WHAT IS TOO BROAD, TOO NARROW, AND RIGHT SIZE. AND YOU'LL GET TEENS, BUT IS IT A MEANINGFUL CONNECTION, PROBABLY NOT. SO THE TOOL KIT THEN SUGGESTS THAT A RIGHT-SIZED CHALLENGE WOULD BE HOW MIGHT WE CREATE RELEVANT DIGITAL SERVICES FOR UNDERSERVED TEENS WHO VISIT THE LIBRARY AFTER SCHOOL. SO THAT GETS MUCH MORE SPECIFIC, MUCH MORE FOCUSED ON A VERY PARTICULAR AUDIENCE, SO YOU CAN DIRECT YOUR ATTENTIONS TO THAT AUDIENCE TO TRY AND UNDERSTAND MORE. I SUGGEST A LAYER IN BETWEEN, AND THIS FOR ME IS REALLY KIND OF ESSENTIAL TO THAT OPEN-MINDED APPROACH TO COMMUNITY DISCOVERY. SO THIS LAYER IN BETWEEN WOULD BE HOW MIGHT WE GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IS MEANINGFUL TO UNDERSERVED TEENS WHO MAY OR MAY NOT ALREADY USE THE LIBRARY. SO MY GUIDELINE FOR DISCOVERY IS TO REALLY, YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND AROUND A PARTICULAR ACTIVITY OR FOCUS OR AUDIENCE, BUT REALLY START WITH TRYING TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND. SO THIS IS A RHETORICAL QUESTION, HOW WELL DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY? BUT I INVITE YOU TO PUT INTO CHAT THINGS THAT YOU'VE ALREADY DONE, APPROACHES, STRATEGIES, YOU'VE ALREADY USED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY. AND THIS IS PROBABLY GOING TO VARY A LOT DEPENDING ON YOUR POSITION IN THE LIBRARY. IF YOU'RE A LIBRARY DIRECTOR, IT'S PROBABLY MUCH MORE LIKELY THAT YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN OUTSIDE AND ENGAGED WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, OTHER CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS, IN YOUR COMMUNITY. IF YOU ARE A LIBRARY THAT'S BIG ENOUGH TO HAVE DEDICATED OUTREACH PEOPLE, THEN THIS -- THESE PEOPLE WILL PROBABLY HAVE HAD MUCH MORE DIRECT PERSON-TO-PERSON CONNECTION WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS. AND IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING -- THIS IS VERY MUCH RELATED TO THAT WHOLE HARDWOOD PROCESS OF INVESTIGATION AND DEEPLY UNDERSTANDING YOUR COMMUNITY. SO IT'S GREAT, YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN DOING A LOT OF THINGS. MAYBE YOU WON'T LEARN ANYTHING NEW, BUT I HOPE YOU WILL. SO IT WAS -- WHEN WE STARTED THE SMART SPACES PROJECT, IT WAS REALLY ATTEMPTING TO ASSUME THAT LIBRARIES IN VERY SMALL TOWNS ALREADY KNEW THEIR COMMUNITIES PRETTY WELL. SO THE PROJECT TEAM WERE SURPRISED AND OUR PARTICIPANTS WERE SURPRISED TO REALIZE THAT THEY DIDN'T NECESSARILY KNOW THE COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS THEY THOUGHT. THIS QUOTE IS TYPICAL OF A NUMBER OF RESPONSES THAT WE GOT FROM OUR ROUND ONE PARTICIPANTS THAT THEY STARTED OUT THINKING THEY WERE PRETTY SURE WHAT THEIR COMMUNITY NEEDED, WE'RE THE LIBRARY, WE KNOW WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU, AND THEN AFTER GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS, THEY FOUND THINGS OUT THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW BEFORE, AND THIS PERSON GOES ON TO SAY THAT THOSE DISCOVERIES LED US TO CREATE A SPACE, A SMART SPACE THAT WOULD BE BETTER USED BY THE COMMUNITY THAN MY ORIGINAL IDEA. SO IT'S A VALUE OF REALLY REMOVING THAT LENS OF ANY PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS AND REALLY GOING OUT WITH A TRUE SORT OF EXPLORER'S EYE INTO YOUR COMMUNITIES. AND I WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO SOME OF THE TOOLS AND RESOURCES THAT WILL HELP YOU DO THIS THAT YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY USED OR MAYBE NOT. I'M SORT OF GUESSING THAT MANY, MANY OF YOU HAVE DONE SURVEYS. SURVEYS ARE -- THEY SERVE AS THE NATURAL, LOGICAL STARTING POINT, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF ADVANTAGES TO SURVEYS. SO THE ESSENCE OF DISCOVERY IS MAKING THOSE CONNECTIONS, THOSE PERSONAL CONNECTIONS AND STARTING CONVERSATIONS. AND SO IT'S REALLY CONNECTING IN POSSIBLY A DIFFERENT WAY THAN YOU ALREADY HAVE. AND BEING AWARE THAT THIS IS A TWO-WAY CONNECTION, THIS IS A WONDERFUL QUOTE FROM ONE OF OUR ROUND ONE PARTICIPANTS, AND THIS IS FROM SOMEONE WHO REALLY HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY GONE OUT INTO HER COMMUNITY, SHE'S NOT THE DIRECTOR, WITH HER SORT OF LIBRARY PRESENCE AND TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE AROUND THE LIBRARY AND THE COMMUNITY. AND SHE WAS VERY PLEASED AND SURPRISED, SHE GOT A LOT OUT OF IT, SHE WAS INITIALLY HESITANT, SO IT'S VERY TRUE THAT THIS IS PROBABLY GOING TO STRETCH MANY OF YOU OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU REALLY HAVEN'T DONE THIS BEFORE. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WAS SHARED BY MANY OF OUR SMART SPACES PARTICIPANTS, BUT BY THE END OF THE ROUND ONE PROJECT, IT WAS PRETTY UNANIMOUS THAT THIS WHOLE PROCESS WAS WELL WORTH IT. WE ARE NOW IN THAT PHASE WITH THE ROUND TWO, AND THEY'RE STARTING A LOT FROM THAT SORT OF FEELING OF INTIMIDATION, BUT I'M ALREADY SEEING A LOT OF GROWTH AND CONFIDENCE BECAUSE YOU GET SUCH RICH FEEDBACK, AND IT'S REALLY -- IT'S JUST SELF-REINFORCING WHEN YOU START TO UNDERSTAND HOW POSITIVE AND VALUABLE THESE CONNECTIONS CAN BE. WHAT WE HAVE -- WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL A BASKET OF DISCOVERY TOOLS. I'M NOT GOING TO GO INTO DETAIL AT LENGTH ON THEM. SURVEYS CAN FEEL SO FORMAL, AND THIS IF YOU'RE ENCOURAGING THEIR SOCIAL CONNECTIONS AND ENCOURAGING THESE REALLY INFORMAL SPONTANEOUS, IT CAN REALLY STIMULATE SOME MORE IMAGINATIVE THINKING AND RESPONSES ABOUT THE COMMUNITY. THEY DECIDED TO WRITE A NEW MISSION STATEMENT, CREATE A NEW LOGO, GET A NEW WEBSITE, AND START A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN BECAUSE THEY REALIZED THAT THEIR AGING 150-YEAR-OLD BUILDING WAS NOT REALLY SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THIS WOULD BE FUN. SO SHE CHOSE THE COLORS AND THE FURNISHINGS. SAME -- IN FACT, ALL OF THESE EXAMPLES, THEY ALL OVERHEARD THE LIBRARY STAFF TALKING ABOUT THE PROJECT. AND THEN THESE TWO AMAZING TEENAGERS WHO WERE INTERESTED IN GETTING A GRAPHIC DESIGN BUSINESS UP AND GOING FOR THEMSELVES AND SO THEY -- THEY'RE A ALSO INEXPERIENCED AND THEY VOLUNTEERED TO PAINT A MUELLER ON WHAT WAS -- A MURAL ON WHAT WAS THIS DARK BLUE WALL. COULD WE DO IT IN THE LIBRARY? SO THIS WAS THE PERFECT -- IT WAS KIND OF LIKE ACTION PROTOTYPING. IT WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE TEENS TO PRACTICE ORGANIZING, PRODUCING, AND PULLING OFF A MAJOR UNDERTAKING, AND IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LIBRARY TO SEE WHETHER THEY COULD DO IT. SO AGAIN, AN ELEMENT OF TRUST, OF OKAY, WE'RE JUST GOING TO TURN THINGS OVER TO YOU. BUT THIS GROUP OF TEENS WAS AMAZINGLY ORGANIZED AND CREATIVE. SO THEY JUST DESIGNED AND PRODUCED AND DELIVERED THIS AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL PARTY THAT WAS ALL HARRY POTTER THEMED WITH THE BRICK WALL SECRET ENTRY, THEY FABRICATED THESE PRIZES, THESE LITTLE SNITCHES AND OTHER HARRY POTTER THEMED PRIZES AND OF COURSE THEY DESIGNED HARRY POTTER THEMED GAMES FOR THE TEENS. AND THEY MANAGED TO ATTRACT TEENS IN THE COMMUNITY WHO HAD PROBABLY NEVER STEPPED IN THE LIBRARY BEFORE. IT GOT MOMENTUM GOING, AND NOW THE TEENS, NOW THE PHYSICAL SPACE IS FINALLY FINISHED. IF I COULD JUST CLICK THERE. WHOOPS. AND YOU CAN SEE IT'S NOT ELABORATE.
