SO THESE WERE IMAGES THAT WERE JUST PULLED OFF THE INTERNET AND PACKAGED UP TO LOOK LIKE A NEWS PIECE, BUT THAT'S ENTIRELY FALSE. I THINK A LOT OF US REMEMBER THIS INCIDENT ON THE NATIONAL MALL, AND THAT GOT A LOT OF ATTENTION. WHAT DIDN'T GET QUITE AS MUCH ATTENTION WAS THE ACCOUNT THAT INITIALLY TWEETED THAT VIDEO CLIP. THEY TWEETED FROM AT 2020 FIGHT WAS THE HANDLE AND CLAIMED TO BE A TEACHER AND ADVOCATE FIGHTING FOR 2020 IN CALIFORNIA. IF WE HOVER OVER THE JOINED LINE THERE, JOINED DECEMBER 2016 WE CAN SEE WHAT TIME AND DATE THIS PERSON JOINED TWITTER. IF WE TAKE A LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER AT THE ACCOUNT, WE CAN SEE THAT THEY HAVE AN EXTRAORDINARILY ACTIVE TWITTER HAB ABOUT -- HABIT. SO WE COULD DO THE MATH AND FIGURE OUT ABOUT HOW MANY TWEETS A DAY THAT ADDS UP TO. IT IS A LOT OF ACTIVITY, POSSIBLY AUTOMATED OR SEMIAUTOMATED ACCOUNT. THERE ARE A LOT OF FOLLOWERS, 41 AND A HALF THOUSAND FOLLOWERS WHICH IS A LOT, BUT THIS PERSON IS ALSO FOLLOWING A LOT SO THAT KIND OF FOLLOWER, FOLLOWING PARITY IMPLIES OR SUGGESTS THAT THEY ARE IN A LOT OF PARTISAN GROUPS THAT HAVE A KIND OF FOLLOW-BACK POLICY. YOU FOLLOW ME, I FOLLOW YOU AND WE AMPLIFY EACH OTHER'S MESSAGES. THIS IS A FEW RED FLAGS THAT THAT ACCOUNT THREW UP. OBVIOUSLY, TODAY, PATRONS AND STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY TO A WIDE ARRAY OF INFORMATION FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, RIGHT? SO THEY DON'T NEED TO GO TO THE LIBRARY NECESSARILY TO FIND INFORMATION, ALTHOUGH SOME PATRONS STILL DO THAT. IT'S A PLACE WHERE INCREASINGLY PATRONS ARE GOING TO TRY TO HELP UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION OR HOW TO LEARN -- LEARN HOW TO FIND INFORMATION. THAT'S A BIT OF A SHIFT I THINK IN TERMS OF THE MISSION OF LIBRARIES AND INCREASINGLY LIBRARIES ARE OFFERING PUBLIC PROGRAMMING TO HELP THEIR PATRONS DELIVER -- HELP THEIR PATRONS GAIN SKILLS, ESPECIALLY YOUNGER PATRONS ARE SEEING PUBLIC LIBRARIES FILLING A ROLE IN HELPING STUDENTS GAIN SKILLS WHERE THEY MIGHT NOT BE GETTING THOSE IN THE CLASSROOM SO WE REALLY FEEL LIKE LIBRARIES, SCHOOL BASED OR PUBLIC BASED, ARE REALLYPLASES THAT ARE UNIQUELY POSITIONED AND AN IMPORTANT PLACE FOR THE PUBLIC AND MORE SPECIFICALLY STUDENTS TO HELP UNDERSTAND INFORMATION AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO THINK ABOUT INFORMATION, NOT JUST HOW TO FIND IT. SO OBVIOUSLY LIBRARIANS ARE ALREADY EXPERTS IN INFORMATION LITERACY, WHICH IS GREAT. BUT WE NEED TO HELP USE THAT EXPERIENCE AND USE THAT KNOWLEDGE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, RIGHT? WE WANT THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO ALSO HAVE THOSE SKILLS AND BECAUSE LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS ARE PLACES AND PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONS THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC STILL TRUSTS, IT'S A GREAT MECHANISM FOR SPREADING NEWS AND INFORMATION LITERACY. AND WE ALSO -- OBVIOUSLY, LIBRARIANS ARE ENGAGED WITH STUDENTS AND PATRONS. IN TERMS OF THE PROCESS OF ACTUALLY EVALUATING INFORMATION, RIGHT? IT'S NOT -- IN THE DIGITAL AGE IT'S NOT ENOUGH FOR US TO FIND INFORMATION, BECAUSE AS PETER POINTED OUT PREVIOUSLY, SOME OF THE INFORMATION YOU FIND MAY BE ERRONEOUS. IT MAY BE MORE THAN ERRONEOUS. IT MAY BE PROPAGANDA OR MISINFORMATION CREATED TO DECEIVE US ON PURPOSE. SO LIBRARIANS HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY IN TERMS OF HELPING US TO EVALUATE INFORMATION AND GAINING THOSE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS THAT ARE SO IMPORTANT IN THE 21st CENTURY. INCREASINGLY WE'RE SEEING LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS INTEGRATING NEWS AND INFORMATION LITERACY INTO THEIR PROGRAMMING. SO ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE SEEING IS THAT IT'S NOT JUST ENOUGH TO SAY OFFER A CLASS IN PODCASTING OR A CLASS IN CREATING VIDEOS. YOU ALSO WANT TO GIVE PATRONS AND STUDENTS THE ABILITY TO BE RESPONSIBLE PRODUCERS OF INFORMATION, RIGHT? SO IT'S NOT JUST GIVING THEM THE TOOLS TO PRODUCE INFORMATION, BUT HELPING THEM TO UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION THEY'RE PRODUCING AND BE RESPONSIBLE AND, YOU KNOW, SCHOOL LIBRARIANS CUT ACROSS ALL DISCIPLINES AND SUGGEST MATTER AREAS. SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE SEEN IN TERMS OF THE USE OF OUR PLATFORM IS THAT SCHOOL LIBRARIANS ARE REALLY ONE OF OUR MOST INTENSE USERS. THEY'RE THE PEOPLE WHO TEND TO TOUCH A LOT OF STUDENTS IN A SCHOOL. OFTEN THERE'S A SMALL NUMBER OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS WHO SERVE AN ENTIRE POPULATION OF A SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY END UP HAVING A LOT OF CONTACT WITH STUDENTS AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH LIBRARY SYSTEMS IN CHICAGO, MIAMI, IN NEW YORK. AND AS WE'VE DONE THAT, WE'VE BEEN GIVING THOSE LIBRARIANS AND LIBRARIES THAT FREE ACCESS TO THE CHECKOLOGY VIRTUAL CLASSROOM AS WELL AS OFFERING THEM TRAINING IN HOW TO USE IT. AND THAT'S GENERALLY THE TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC THAT WE ENCOURAGE EDUCATORS AND USERS TO WORK WITH, MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL AGED STUDENTS. SOME OF THE FEEDBACK WE GOT WAS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WAY TO USE OUR PLATFORM AND, YOU KNOW, I THINK WE COULD MAYBE EXTEND THIS TO NEWS LITERACY EDUCATION IN GENERAL IS TO TRY TO FIND A WAY TO INTEGRATE IT INTO OTHER THINGS THAT STUDENTS ARE DOING AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE OUR TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING TO DO SO SOME OF THE LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS WHO HAVE WORKED WITH US IN THE PILOT AND IN OTHER SETTINGS AS WELL OUTSIDE OF QUEENS HAVE OFFERED CHECKOLOGY AS SORT OF A STAND ALONE COURSE, WHICH IS GREAT, BUT IN TERMS OF GAINING INTEREST FOR YOUNG PATRONS, FINDING A WAY TO INTEGRATE IT SOMETHING THAT THEY MIGHT BE ALREADY BE INTERESTED IN, LIKE PODCASTS OR DOING VIDEO WORK WILL HELP GAIN MORE INTEREST AND GET MORE PEOPLE THROUGH THE DOOR. ALSO, OBVIOUSLY, CHECKOLOGY IS AIMED AT MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SO LOOKING IN TERMS OF SCHEDULING, SCHEDULING IT TO COINCIDE WITH THE ACADEMIC YEAR, LOOKING AT THE ACADEMIC YEAR START. I HAD BEEN WORKING WITH A NUMBER OF THE STUDENTS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR ON A PROGRAM CALLED TEXT EXPLORERS WHERE THEY WERE LEARNING DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES. SOMETIMES, IT WAS DOING RESEARCH ON THE COMPUTER, SOMETIMES, IT WAS LEARNING HOW TO USE TABLETS TO MAKE VIDEOS. SO I KIND OF HAD A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE ALREADY, AND THEN WE INVITED IN OTHER REGULAR LIBRARY USERS, AS WELL. BUT I WOULD SAY THE CORE GROUP WAS THAT GROUP THAT WAS THERE FOR THE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM SO WE KIND OF HAD A BUILT-IN AUDIENCE, WHICH HELPED A LOT I THINK IN GETTING THEM INCENTIVIZED TO JOIN US BECAUSE AS MANY OF YOU WHO WORK WITH THAT AGE MIGHT KNOW, ESPECIALLY ONCE THEY START TO GET INTO SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE AND BEYOND THEY'RE LESS LIKELY TO COME INTO A PROGRAM, UNLESS THEIR FRIENDS ARE ALL IN THERE. WE WORKED WITH THEM AND ONE OF THE REASONS I WAS EXCITED TO DO IT, I HAD RECEIVED A GRANT TO DO A SERIES OF DIGITAL NARRATIVES FROM THE COMMUNITY AND ONE PART OF THAT WAS THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE WORKING WITH THIS GROUP AND OTHER TEENS ON CREATING A PODCAST OF ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY SO FOR ME, THIS WAS A REALLY GOOD WAY TO KIND OF INTRODUCE IDEAS OF HOW YOU CONSUME NEWS, LESS SO ABOUT HOW YOU'RE EDITING BUT FROM THE IDEA HOW YOU CONSUME NEWS SHOULD INFORM HOW YOU CREATE NEWS AS WELL SO WE STARTED FROM THERE AND USED THIS AS AN INTRO INTO THIS LONGER PROJECT THAT WE DID LATER IN THE YEAR AND GENERALLY SPEAKING, WE HAD A CONSISTENT GROUP OF STUDENTS COMING IN. I THINK IT DID REALLY HELP THAT IT WAS A SERIES AND NOT JUST ONE-OFF. AND SO THE KIDS THAT WERE PARTICIPATING IN IT FROM THE BEGINNING I THINK DEFINITELY GOT THE MOST OUT OF IT, WERE THE MOST ENGAGED. WE DID THE CLASS AS A SHARED SCREEN SO I HAD THE PROJECTIONS ON THE BOARD. IN THEORY THEY HAD LAPTOPS. WE HAD SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES ON OUR END, IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH NEWS LITERACY PROJECT IN TERMS OF THEM USING THE INTERNET TO WATCH THE VIDEOS SPECIFICALLY SO WHAT I WOULD DO IS SHOW THE VIDEOS TO THEM AND THEN WE WOULD DISCUSS EACH OF THE SCENARIOS AND THE FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS THAT WERE WITH THE VIDEOS. AND IT ACTUALLY, BECAUSE IT WAS A GROUP THAT I HAD BEEN WORKING WITH THAT KNEW EACH OTHER WELL IT ACTUALLY WAS A REALLY GREAT WAY OF REINFORCING THE IDEAS. THE KIDS HAD A LOT OF FUN KIND OF GUESSING WHAT THE RIGHT ANSWERS WERE, DISCUSSING WHY. WE SET UP A WHOLE SYSTEM WHERE THEY WOULD TRY TO KIND OF DEBATE WHAT WAS THE RIGHT ANSWER BEFORE HE WOULD -- WE WOULD ACTUALLY GO THROUGH WHAT THE RIGHT ANSWER WAS. THAT GAVE THEM A DEEPER VIEW OF THE ISSUES AND THE COMMON MISTAKES YOU MIGHT MAKE WHEN YOU'RE CONSUMING MEDIA. LIKE TO ME IT WAS INTERESTING TO TALK TO STUDENTS AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S LIKE CONTENT PRODUCERS, THEY ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND A LOT MORE WE SOMETIMES GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR IN TERMS OF LIKE PRIVACY AND WHAT THEY'RE PUTTING OUT THERE, BUT THEY DO HAVE A TENDENCY TO TRUST WHAT THEY'RE CONSUMING, PARTICULARLY ON SOME OF THE NEWER SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS LIKE YouTube, I HAD THIS INTERESTING CONVERSATION WITH THEM WHERE LIKE I WOULD SAY 90% OF THEM THOUGHT THAT EVERYTHING THAT THEY SAW ON YouTube HAD TO BE ACCURATE BECAUSE IT'S EDITED BY SOMEBODY SO IT MUST BE TRUE. SO WE HAD A BIG DISCUSSION ABOUT THAT THAT CAME OUT OF THIS CLASS. AND IT HELPED PREPARE THEM AGAIN FOR WHEN THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT HOW THEY WERE GOING TO CREATE A LARGER PROJECT.
