Jennifer Unverified 12:08 PM I have used a mentimeter quiz game show to get students using relevant databases to answer questions . TM Telfer, Michaela12:08 PM One of our archives & special colls colleagues made some amazing archival puzzle boxes (think, escape room in a box style but the clues are from primary sources) Amber Van Kampen Unverified 12:08 PM We use scavenger hunts on a regular basis. Michele Newman Unverified 12:18 PM We have games for adults as well! I just happen to often focus on Kids! Scott D Unverified 12:31 PM I will let @Michele or Chris speak to the translation of the escape room. WebJunction Webinars deleted their own message. 12:38 PM WebJunction Webinars12:38 PM MIL = misinformation literacy Arthur LaRue Unverified 12:38 PM certainly see the need, but not a lot of desire for people to improve their IL SM Stephanie Skaryd M.12:38 PM It's definitely changing and I think that what was said earlier - it's not just about learning "what to look for and what not to look for" but practical skills that'll stick as well. And people learn more when they're having fun Jessi Dixon Unverified 12:38 PM Youth certainly engage more readily with hands-on, collaborative MIL programming, and I wonder how I can adapt these ideas to adults as well. Jen Woo (she/her) Unverified 12:38 PM There's a need for an engaging way to provide info literacy for drop-in programs, where kids choose to attend or their caregivers choose to bring their children. As kids get older, it's harder to compete against activities in our area. Elizabeth Decker Unverified 12:38 PM I see a much larger need because a lack of trustworthy sources social media has made everyone into a newscaster for whatever they want to say Jen Unverified 12:38 PM With older folks especially, we see the inability to recognize deepfakes, AI-generated content. Cathy Unverified 12:38 PM There's ALWAYS a need for MIL. Joshlyn Thomas Unverified 12:39 PM MIL needs to change for my community, including those of us tasked with learning alongside library users. CR Chelsie Russo12:39 PM Definitely need. People not even realizing they were reading AI when searching something on Google Oscar Unverified 12:39 PM Very much! I see people taking AI summaries as fact, and it's a lot to deal with to totally rewire which sources to trust, especially with enshittification Nicole Ball Unverified 12:39 PM Patrons have a lot of questions about AI, but I don't know if they always know quite what to ask. Lauren Unverified 12:39 PM kids in our community LOVE AI, so providing programming that engages in critical thinking around AI is really needed Monique Brada Unverified 12:39 PM It's definitely changed, but I'm not sure how much patrons are looking for new ways of approachiing it. There's a lot of overwhelm/checking out. I work with adults, btw. Joshlyn Thomas Unverified 12:42 PM Same here. Trying to look for fun ways to engage with adults in a way that does not contribute to the overwhelm. Franki Unverified 12:40 PM I work with first year college students and many lack a preparedness to do college level research work. They are increasingly relying on AI to answer questions instead of seeking information for themselves. Julia Gundzik Unverified 12:40 PM I like that these games use tangible and physical mediums for discussing what can seem to be very abstract concepts for youths and people new to technology. Definitely a need for media literacy now that AI is so prevalent! Andrea Davis - Alameda County Library Unverified 12:40 PM It's one of the bigger issues we're thinking about in our Equity Services division, the impact is compounded for at risk communities Scott D Unverified 12:42 PM The balance around risk is so tough. And it seems to vary for different orgs and people. Blythe Summers Unverified 12:40 PM It's hard to be an expert when things change so fast - i love the focus on co-design because it lets our community engage with critical questions and define their own take aways. Library as facilitator rather than expert. Cathy Unverified 12:40 PM It's also finding a way for people not to be embarrassed when they get it wrong and encourage them to question what they consume and know how to evaluate and begin to research. Chris Coward12:43 PM Indeed. games provide a safe space to "fail" Scott D Unverified 12:41 PM The conversation on AI is really moving fast and is critical. I am about to start a project with the University of Washington in Seattle and McGill University in Montreal working with libraries to study what needs their communities have for AI literacy. The plan is to build small spaces in libraries (think a phone booth) where people can freely and anonymously share their concerns / hopes/ uses / questions about AI. It is meant to remove the embarrasment and fear of these spaces. If you want to collaborate on this please let me know (scottbdejong@gmail.com) A Unverified 12:43 PM I have seen librarians at my workplace (rural public library) with the same kind of misconceptions and knee jerk reactions to AI (and other things) as the general public - it's important to remember that simply being a librarian does not automatically make us experts, and we should try to have discussions and education for staff, not just the public. Scott D Unverified 12:44 PM This kind of self reflection is crucial. Something I have been trying to do with schooltteachers as well! 😃 Scott D Unverified 12:43 PM I absolutely love the drawing of that rollercoaster. It is a 10/10 Chris Coward12:46 PM Games also have the benefit of removing the librarian from having to be the authority skelley Unverified 12:46 PM Seltzer water tastes like TV static but I'm glad they compared it to soda which can clean rust off metal. And the only way to begin is by beginning." Scott D Unverified 12:50 PM hahahaha yesssss! It is a great quote and show Michele Newman Unverified 12:51 PM Love Game Changer!! Andrea Davis - Alameda County Library Unverified 12:54 PM Thank you for sharing this collaborative research and tools! I'm looking forward to plugging in with the games already out there and participating in prototyping efforts Jennifer (she/her) Unverified 12:54 PM Yes, advertising, or whether we should integrate into other programs, whether it works better in-library or as outreach programs... things like that! WS Williams, Robyn J (Big Sandy)12:55 PM We're terrified of being seen as childish in play, but experience is what drove us forward. Remember people pieced quilt blocks before they ever learned trigonometry. Scott D Unverified 12:55 PM I believe we are always playing. We might not describe it that way, but humans are playful so much! I've had success with the K-Pop escape room, both as its own program for teens and adults (I even called it misinformation for that one) and as part of a larger K-pop event.
