Upgrading to WordPress 2.5+
11:21 AM EDT 8/6/08
The move from WordPress 2.3.x to 2.5 (and up) made some fairly dramatic changes to the appearances of the backend. I haven't upgraded our site yet because I'd just gotten to the point where people were comfortable posting, and I don't want to have to redo all that training.

How are you handling the upgrade?

Hi Laura --

We wrestled with the same question here at WebJunction. We didn't want to "force" an upgrade on our Partners just so we could have the newest version of WP, however security updates made it mandatory.

So we did it. And we didn't hear a single complaint from any of our staff (some very occasional users) or Partners (so far, but this post may bring us one or two). I think for the most part, any current user will be able to adopt to 2.5+ with little hassle. They've done a good job in making new locations and buttons discoverable, and in some cases (handling of images, the image gallery, and embedded media) the improvements GREATLY outweigh the UI changes.

If you have any specific areas of concern that you want addressed, just let me know and I'll try to take a swing at them.

Best,
Tim King

PS -- wordpress.com is on the "latest" version of WP. It only takes a couple minutes to set up an account. Though they may not use the same plugins and your template may not be there, it's still an easy way to "try" out the changes to see how they work on the admin side.

Yeah, we finally had to do the upgrade, and it turned out to be much less of a big deal than I'd thought it might be. I did have a wordpress.com account set up to let people try it out for a couple of months before the upgrade, and I also made a little movie to introduce people to the way it works. Anyone should feel free to borrow or steal it!

Great video, Laura! Thanks for sharing. I'm sure that will help folks quite a bit.

BTW, if you have embed code for the video you are welcome to post it here in the wp4lib group.
