Free VPN client and Service to help protect laptops
10:31 AM EST 1/5/07

After reading David Pogue's post about "How Secure is Your Wi-Fi Connection?", I decided to look around for a free VPN client and service that I could recommend to others. Poque is a technology writer for the New York Times and a frequent contributor to NPR. He writes a great column and blog. His recent post was about his experiences in testing free wi-fi hotspots for security. One of the comments mentioned the need to use a VPN.

I found this free one called Hotspot Shield. It does not call itself a VPN but it is. Clikc on the link below for more information and to download it. If you can't get access to a VPN provided by your employer, this is a good alternative. There are also many commercial services offering VPNs as well. This may be one type of service to suggest to patrons using your wi-fi as well. Of course, we all know that publicly available wi-fi networks offered by libraries are fully secure, don't we?
