PublicIP is fabulous
4:15 PM EDT 4/7/06
Hi All!

If you remember, I went before my Board last November to request permission to set up a free hotspot. They were thrilled to be able to offer this new service and gave me the go-ahead.

I purchased a $120 a year subscription to PublicIP. It was set up in a matter of hours. There were only a couple minor glitches that were my issue, not the programs but I can't tell you how great the customer service I received was! Scott Tulley is the man who created PublicIP and he has gone above and beyond to help me when I needed it.

Do I recommend PublicIP? Oh, heck yes!

Jean

Congratulations! I hope others post here with their successes and even their failures.

We have been using PublicIP for almost a year and so far it has worked quite well. We have the lowest priced option ($85 per year) and it works great for us. It wasn't without some issues but overall it works great and Scott at PublicIP has been helpful as well. I don't know much about the other wifi products out there, but this one is priced right (PublicIP.net is actually free while PublicIP.com is the pay service) and it seems to work well.

I had to go get myself informed about what this PublicIP is that you're raving about. I'll assume I'm not the only one who could use a bit of infill of information, so here's what I learned:

I was confused at first because the PublicIP.net website says it's a "FREE, open source hotspot solution." ZoneCD, which is “a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software pre-configured to create a WiFi gateway” can be downloaded for free. It's the commercial counterpart --PublicIP.com--that provides layers of service, like authentication control, live help, or custom template hosting, depending on what level of subscription you choose.

Here’s a detailed (long) post on the PublicIP forum about the Brevard County (FL) Library’s successful installation.

Thanks to Jean and 'butters' for cluing me in to this wifi option!
