Online Continuing Education Opportunities

Hello all,

Stick season is upon us and we're nearing the end of the Vermont Department of Libraries 2009 workshop schedule. But we don't want to stop learning until new programs are offered in the spring.

In order to continue providing educational opportunities, DOL has paid for a number of online courses for free use by Vermont library staff. These have been purchased from WebJunction and Le@d. Included are courses on library services, management, technology, computer hardware and software applications, and web design and development.
The courses are self-paced and after enrollment, you will have access to the course materials for one year.

If you are interested in taking a course, first explore the course catalogs from each of the providers: WebJunction, Le@d, then contact Mara Siegel at mara.siegel@mail.dol.state.vt.us to obtain the coupon code for the course.

Digital Storytelling

Here's a list of resources for Digital Storytelling, a workshop given September 2, 2009. Participants used Moviemaker or iMovie to put together quick Youtube videos promoting books or library services. Some of the videos are compiled at Good Ideas from Vermont Libraries

Vermont Online Library workshop, 2009 update

Here's an introductory workshop for teaching the Vermont Online Library, updated in September 2009. The link takes you to a PowerPoint of screenshots with labels. You can view it online at http://tinyurl.com/qbdmof.

The screenshots take the user step by step through finding material and using e-mail and print commands.

The VOL PPT Script matches the PowerPoint, slide by slide, for easy instruction. Use the Librarian Instructions for more information on getting your password and presenting the workshop.

Need some user handouts? Gale Search Tips are provided by Gale, or choose a two-sided page created to go with the PowerPoint. Don't forget to request the glossy VOL brochures from the VT Department of Libraries at (802) 828-3261.

I have added here a policy worksheet that could be helpful in planning the set up or migration of your library automation system. The terminology for you system may be a bit different, but the worksheets can give you an idea of the kind of information you will want to have in hand when you set up a new ILS.
