Welcome to all who stumble upon this board! This year's monthly workshops are designed to help Vermont public librarians and trustees begin and complete written long range plans by fall, 2007. The January session was an introduction to planning, based on Sandra Nelson's The New Planning for Results (ALA, 2001). February's session dealt with community data, how to find it, and what to do with it. I will be attaching files for handouts from those and ongoing sessions throughout the year.

Working with community data

At the February workshop, we discussed resources for gathering and analyzing data about your community. One of the best sources for census information in a nice, neat (4 page) package is the UVM Center for Rural Studies - http://crs.uvm.edu/2000dps/

The community profile you can obtain for your town(s) will help you complete Workform B as well as a one page fact sheet of your community. Review these with your planning committee before completing a SWOT analysis of the community (Workform C). Those workforms are available at http://www.elearnlibraries.com/workforms/new_planning_for_results.html

I am attaching some of the other handouts from the February session, including a sample fact sheet for you to adapt and information on conducting community meetings (focus groups). Contact me for more sample library surveys.

At today's workshop, I discussed various sources for public library data, both in Vermont and beyond. Each year, the Department of Libraries pubilshes public library data, which is available online at http://dol.state.vt.us/GOPHER_ROOT5/LIBRARIES/stats/PLSTATS.HTML

Vermont's public library statistics are included in a national database, and you can compare your library's performance and other data to that of any other library or group of libraries in the country by going to http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/libraries/compare/index.asp?LibraryType=Public

The Colorado Library Research Service (http://www.lrs.org) is a good starting point for working with library data. Attached are a few other handouts from today's session.

At our May session, we discussed using community and library data to develop a list of community needs and to begin figuring out library service responses to those needs. The Burnham Memorial Library in Colchester's planning committee developed a particularly clear and useful list of needs along with some possible library solutions.

I also discussed the impact that trend data can offer in getting a clear picture of how the library has been doing. I am attaching a file showing the growth of Vermont's public library use statewide. Click on the tabs to see trends for your library's population range - they vary by size.

At the July 6 session, Martha Reid of the Burnham Memorial Library, Colchester, described her library's planning process and detailed findings and conclusions. I went over writing mission statements (editing Burnham's previous mission based on Marty's discussion of the new plan) and, very briefly, writing goals.

Planning for Results (by Himmel & Wilson, ALA, 1998) had an excellent worksheet "R" for developing a mission statement. They suggest listing services responses chosen along with key words and phases that have arisen during planning discussions. Melding these thoughts into a few sentences that reflect what the library plans to achieve in the next five years is what writing a mission statement is all about. Think about what you might want on a bumper sticker for the library.
