Letting the community know about the library
3:28 PM EDT 7/10/07
Spread your library's reach through public relations - smart use of local media, effective written publicity pieces, and strong connections with community organizations - together with programs of interest to various segments of the community. The materials on the attached bibliography will offer some ideas, but good knowledge of community resources is essential.

Get to know the editor of your local newspaper, and make sure library news and events are submitted with plenty of lead time. Send news often. Use computer programs to develop quick signs and posters that can be printed in the library and distributed around town. Create templates to use over and over again.

Programs needn't be expensive to be effective, and some of the best program resources may be right in your community. Hobbies, trips, interests, and occupations of your town's residents can be fascinating program topics. Offering a variety of programs may attract a wider range of the public and help your library become a real community center. For examples of publicity pieces and program ideas, request a copy of "Good Ideas," compiled by Amy Howlett every other year, from the Midstate Regional Library.
