Videoconferencing

Do any of your libraries offer videoconferencing as a service to patrons and local organizations? We are building a new library in Granby, CO, and have received a request to look into this service. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Shelly, this is an interesting service to offer patrons. I don't have a direct answer, but I want to clue you in to OPAL (Online Programming for Libraries), a videoconferencing interface that is available free to libraries.

You can read more about it in the Podcasting and RSS Feeds topic. Scroll about halfway down to where members 'bckhough' and 'rose' share their experiences with the software. It's worth investigating, IMO

I know that there are definitely libraries out there that offer video conferencing services for the public (many with Polycom units). I wish I could think of a particular location because it would be interesting to know what they charge, what their policies are, etc.....

The legal field is using video conferencing a lot as is the medical field, so I'm guessing there are community needs for video conferencing capabilities (beyond the ways a library can use it for programming, for training, for meetings, etc) -- especially in those smaller communities where a commercial vendor (like Kinko's) doesn't offer the service. Those rural areas are the ones that it seems could benefit the most from not having to drive drive drive to get to meetings, etc.

I'll do some looking around to see if I can find out what libraries here in Kansas are doing. We have many libraries that have Polycom systems, but I'm not sure if any of them are allowing public use (beyond library-sponsored programming).

Good question!

Thanks for the reply, Brenda. I am very interested in how other libraries have implemented video conferencing.
