I have scheduled some sessions to work with library trustees and board members to discuss their roles in planning for technology in their libraries. Does anyone have any materials/suggestions/comments to share on this topic?

Thanks for posting on the technology planning forum!

I'm sure you've already checked out the resources in the Policies and Practices section here at WebJunction. http://www.webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=391

I don't see anything that is specifically aimed at trustees and board members, but I'll ask around and see if I can uncover anything elsewhere. Hopefully others will respond here,too.

When are your sessions?

Kendra,

I know that BobSpence has just been through a big planning process (technology, funding, and other items) with his library board. He may have some good ideas. You can reach him through the WJ member directory. Just click on Members Directory from the community Center tab, and do a "Cntl F" for BobSpence and you should find him straight away. If he doesn't find this topic here first, that is! emoticon

Hi Kendra!
I was doing some research on this and found a couple of links which might be useful:

Technology Affinity Group (TAG): http://www.tagtech.org/index.htm
A lot of their stuff seems focused on grantor/grantee relationships and technology but maybe the same information could be applied to trustees and board members?

Here is what is called a "Free Complete Toolkit for Boards" from the Management Assistance Project for Non-Profits: http://www.mapnp.org/library/boards/boards.htm#anchor579041

This next one isn't geared specifically to libraries but to boards and you may be able to glean some information from some of the links provided on this page.

I finally read your piece here in WJ after responding with a separate note. Just let me add here that someone once said, "Never bring up an issue on the floor unless you already know the answer." That may be overstated, but the truth is, you need to know what your aiming for in order to hit it. Do you know what needs there are? Have you done a survey? Do you know the facts about the issues you are attempting to find solutions for? The art of leadership is to so formulate your goals so that when it is achieved, it makes no difference who gets the credit or at least they (the board) believe it's their idea.
