Web 2.0 in library websites
10:49 AM EST 1/4/08
One of the things I've done recently is to "Web 2.0ify" our home page (http://www.mrrl.org) by adding a Flickr slide show, our blog and twitter feeds and some "add to social bookmarking" ability on some of our pages (including catalog entries). This is a temporary solution until the web site is completely redesigned. With this, and some serious idea-stealing, in mind, what library websites have you all seen that incorporate the features and applications of Web 2.0 in a really innovative way? I'm reasonably happy with what we have now, but if someone else is doing something really cool - I'd love to steal the idea and add it in!

Looks nice!

I'm playing around with the FeedDigest thing you've used for "MRRL's Latest Announcements." I never saw this before, so I'm glad to find out about it.

But I can't figure out what you used for "MRRL's News Updates" on the left hand side, and how the source for it is the same or different. It looks like some of the entries are the same (Best Books of 2007) but not all.

MRRL's new updates is a widget directly from Twitter. It displays our Twitter feed on the site - which gets it's information from our blog (so some of the entries will be the same), our Flickr stream and our Bookmobile announcements.

I'm not sure if this qualifies but, I created a page that allows patrons to copy and paste a bit of javascript into their own web pages. It allows them to get the updates from our Events RSS feeds or podcasts directly on their own website.

I used magpie and feed2js.

Mike, I think that absolutely qualifies. It's very cool for the patrons and p.r. for the library too.

This is a great topic that should be seen by a larger audience. I'd love to see this thread grow with more examples and additional discussion. As a result, I made the question of the week!

People will post their suggestions here in your topic or as a comment on BlogJunction.

Thanks for the great question!

Thanks everyone.

There is a mother load of cool things you can add to your web site from the Google Gadgets page.

http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open

You can find almost anything there. Add an Instant message client to you're web page for reference service. Maybe your a "Pac-Man" fan. You could add that to your teens page.

I've been compiling a list in del.icio.us:

(tag as "library2.0 example")
