Many libraries are interested in personalizing their online services (along the lines of Amazon.com), but privacy issues always come up when you start talking about collecting and storing personal information for patrons.

Is your library grappling with this?

Any creative solutions out there?

Christie:

We have "grappled" with the privacy issue at our library. Our automated system does provide us with the ability to require a password. We don't want to just require a patron card number as that is too easy. We have thought about having people come up with a PIN number that has to be setup at the library before they could get into their account online through our website....most just want to be able to check when their books are due.

We've hesitated implementing anything so far in hopes we would find out how others are doing it.

What about the idea posed here of letting patrons login to the Web site (and access their accounts, and check out books) anonymously?

No, Chrystie, I don't forsee our little library going as far as issuing cash card type checkouts in the near future....wow, that is a wild article and sure makes you think up all kinds of possibilities though.

Sorry,

Let me get this right. You mean self service to shared directories and services?

I read from the article, "collecting personal identity information about customers is a dangerous activity for a library".

Well, if its is, who owns the library?
And are we talking about the physical one or the virtual ones?

Oh, that's right. It doesn't matter. No one knows.
