Does anyone know of good online tutorials for librarians to learn more about web publishing and other IT related issues? Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

Welcome to the All Aboard/Web Junction community.

I do know that the Learning Center here on Webjunction has a course on using Frontpage 2000. You might want to check that and see if it is useful for you. I know that there are also plans to make more web and IT classes available in the future.

There must be other resources available as well, and maybe other members of our community will have some tips.

Again, welcome to Webjunction and thanks for posting.

Stephanie,

I like to use this site as an additional resource for my web dev classes..

Depending on what you mean by web publishing, there are some good guides out there on how to set up web servers, like

if you are thinking of setting up an Apache server.

Brenda brings up a good point - you might want to take a look at the "Basic Computer Support - Resources?" topic in this forum. Good resources in there.

And don't forget to check out the technology resources section in WebJunction ... or the courses in the Learning Center!

Hi Stephanie,

I've posted this site in other forums, but would like to recommend it again. If you have librarians who are new to web servers, I really like the how things work tutorial - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/web-server.htm -- other sites give more technical how-to info, but that one really helps with the big picture conceptual overview of how the pieces fit together.

Good luck!

If you want to know almost all there is to know about web publishing, you can go to www.w3schools.com.; They have tutorials on everything from basic web design and publishing to using Flash, XML, ASP, Java, etc. It is even possible to get some certifications through them. I believe they are related to the organization that develops HTML standards, but don't quote me on that.

Wendell, I wasn't able to open the link for the W3C schools webpage. If anyone else is having the same problem, try this link: <a href="http://www.w3schools.com" target="_blank">http://www.w3schools.com</a>

This is truly a great resource. I've just added it to my web development 'favorites.'

Hi Stephanie,

This may be a bit of a stretch, but "Computer Arts" magazine is one of the best for tutorials. They cover everything graphics related, but once in a while they have some great web development tutorials. Good to keep an eye on to develop that inner artist.

w3schools is definitely a good starting point.

Another good place to start is the Web Standards Project Learn section:
http://webstandards.org/learn/

For CSS I recommend WestCiv's online tutorials:

And for more advanced articles on trends and techniques I like A List Apart:
