"Holy Grail" of Web Apps?
4:19 PM EST 12/8/06
Hello everyone!

I've been trying to gather materials together for presentations in a number of different fields and hobbies. This has necessitated the creation of a number of different blogs, wikis, photo storage options, calendars, file storage options, and a handful of separate pages used to tie it all together.

This got me thinking--why can't I have one page I can use to access all of these functions, while creating different pages for my adoring public to look at for each topic? It occurred to me that this is my "Holy Grail" at this moment.

Now, some of you may be reading this and thinking, "You idiot! You're describing ****, which can do everything you want in a web application--and your laundry, to boot." If that's the case, please don't hesitate to call me on it.

I thought it would be interesting, however, to find out what your "Holy Grail" might be. You never know, maybe the tech geniuses at Google or some garage start-up are reading this board to find out what we, the information gurus of the world, need in order to connect the masses to the information landscape at their fingertips.

Funny you should ask. There is something I've been meaning to post about in the Tech Watch column (and I will soon) that may be what you are looking for.

Most or maybe all of the services you describe have RSS feeds associated with them. There happens to be great little tool called <a href="http://feed2js.org/" target=blank>Feed to JavaScript</a> that can take anything with an RSS feed and suck it in to a web page. An example of using this is the <a href="../do/DisplayContent?id=14521">Screencasting Tools</a> list here at WJ. This page is created dynamically by grabbing the feed of links tagged with "screencasting" from WJs <a href="http://del.icio.us/WebJunction" target=blank>del.ico.us</a> account. This way adding another link to the account automatically updates this page.

You could use this tool to pull in content from all these disparate sources into your site.

Thanks Dale!

This is just the kind of thing I was looking for. Any other ideas out there?

Your question made me think of SuprGlu. (Don't you love these names?)

Here's what the website says about the product:

Do you already use services like del.icio.us, flickr, blogger, typepad, etc? SuprGlu is a new way to gather all your content from those sites. In a nutshell, SuprGlu:

* gathers your content from popular webservices and publishes them in one convenient place.
* presents your content with simple, great looking templates which you can customize.
* is FREE to use!

Just wanting to note the upcoming battle between Microsoft and Google (with a few other players thrown in): Microsoft, supposedly, has acknowledged that Vista may be its last operating system since so much can be done via web apps.

I suppose the question, ultimately, comes up to security ... how many people *want* their documents on someone else's remote server?

(Makes me want to install Ubuntu right now.)

Ubuntu? I see it's billed as "Linux for human beings" --very interesting! There's been some mention of it over in Open Source forum in the Spanish Language Station topic. Leave it to 'chrisabo' to be right on top of the latest/greatest.

On the privacy issue (the dark side of Web apps), this Mother Jones article Is Google Evil? claims that "Google already knows more about you than the National Security Agency ever will. And don’t assume for a minute it can keep a secret."

Here's the Gartner Group's take on the future of Vista, courtesy of Scientific American: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=FE9007D32710DECCEE9063A381E71AC5

Web apps may very well be the next "big thing." Maybe. :-)

Privacy and protection of data are both valid concerns with web apps. I know that I back up all of my online documents and delete any that aren't necessary to keep online.
