Web 2.0 companies you can't live without?
9:42 PM EST 1/4/07
Hi everyone, and happy New Year!

Michael Arrington at <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com">TechCrunch</a> made an end-of-the-year list of the 15 Web 2.0 companies he uses on a near-daily basis and "can't live without." You can see the list at:

<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/01/02/2007-web-20-companies-i-couldnt-live-without/">http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/01/02/2007-web-20-companies-i-couldnt-live-without/</a>

Many on the list are favorites of mine as well (Flickr, Gmail, Wordpress, YouTube); others have been on my list of things to try out (Digg, Flock); and some were new to me. I would add Meebo and Bloglines to my list...

Has anyone discovered Web 2.0 or social software services in 2006 that have become part of your daily existence?

That's a great article, thanks for posting it, Emily!

Here are my "can't live without" 2.0-tools:

- Bloglines - my RSS aggregator of choice and definitely the one I use *the most*!
- meebo - my IM client of choice, following on the heels of Bloglines for the second-most used!
- del.icio.us - the #1 social bookmarking tool in my world (unrelated sidenote: I signed up for del.icio.us so early that I got my first name as my username! That almost never happens!). Although Arrington mentions that BlueDot is his #1, so I'll have to give that a go soon...
- flickr - not only is flickr where I store and organize my own photographs, but it always provides the perfect diversion when I need one. Just do a tag search for something that's on your mind, or something you're interested in and I *defy* you not to get sucked into hours of browsing!
- pandora - if you spend as much time in front of a screen as I do, you probably already know how much better pandora makes that time! I use last.fm a fair bit too and I really don't think I could choose between them!
- wordpress - it's been my blogging platform of choice for close to 3-years. I'd be lost without it!

OK, how about everyone else? If you had to choose ONE 2.0 tool you couldn't live without, what would it be?

i know that this is not a popular sentitment with librarians, but i love google's personalized, multiple-tabbed homepage, which synchs nicely with gmail, writely, google reader (with multiple/tagged views by category w/out going into the reader!), and even personalized search feeds. i feel like i've discovered the collaborative writer's dream! (i'm sure i'm missing out on something by going for all this integration, but it's nice to have it all in one place.) what I don't use google for? images & social bookmarking. so, my runners up have to be flickr & de.licio.us.

G/day Christie,

You did say "which Companies?" (damn, that italics tool still doesn't work)

I'll point to the forum's index page of these guys.
http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/forumindex.php?
They're a global community of web designers/programmers. And apart from the ads, they're probably the ones I'd see as one that webjunction's community might copy & bring web tools together.

Their site is a bit slow at the moment Putting a few thousand new readers on line each month is obviously hard to keep up with. One thing that is nice is that each feature points to a forum or has a blog at bottom, so if curious George was interested in getting some feedback and "profession wide approach to mentoring' , he might find it a useful way to get some interaction going.

They started about the same time as Webjunction, and their readers are obviously are more inclined to use online stuff than librarians. But I thinik now, as web 2.0 tools mature, yu might find a few hints as to what web design and combination of tools lurkers can't live without. They're about 250 on alexa's global 500.

George calls it mentoring http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=14567
Aarom calls it moderating.

But I think they're takling about the same things.
We can live without tools but we can't live without good moderators.

Some great replies so far. I especially agree with Chrystie that integration is good. Here are a few of my favorites:

#1 Del.icio.us -- The best thing about Web 2.0 as far as I'm concerned. It's been years since I actually used my IE or Firefox bookmarks on a regular basis as a way to organize information. But I use delicious several times a day, and I generally have no problem finding sites that I've tagged, especially with <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3615/">the latest Firefox extension</a>. This extension replaces your normal bookmarks menu with several different views of your tags and bundles. It also makes searching your bookmarks really fast and easy.

Furthermore, delicious is one of the best discovery tools out there. I start most of my technology research here.

#2 Google Reader -- I abandoned Bloglines a few months ago and haven't looked back. Bloglines frequently failed to update my feeds for some reason. And GR just looks better.

#3 Finetune -- Finetune lets me create a station out of songs that I pick rather than songs it thinks I might like. I still listen to Pandora a lot, but lately I've been more attached to FineTune. There are a few catches (no more than 3 songs from any one artist, a minimum of 45 songs), but these restrictions seem reasonable to me.

#4 EMusic -- EMusic is an alternative to ITunes that charges roughly $.30 a song, as opposed to $.99 a song on ITunes. And there's no DRM on the songs I get at EMusic, so I can play the songs anywhere, on any device. I just signed up, so maybe there's a flaw somewhere, but everyone who mentions this service raves about it.

Newsvine, www.newsvine.com, users "seed" articles from news sources all around the world. Also contributors can write their own articles and comment on published or original articles. I find it an easy way to expand my exposure to a variety of news sources!

Also didn't appreciate how many Web 2.0 companies that I use constantly, especially Gmail, Pandora and Skype. Since I relocated a long way from my family, these really help keep me connected.

ok, adding to the list: twitter.

and yes i see that we're talking about tools here and not companies - but i think that may have been the original intent of the question...

i agree that google reader is way better than bloglines, which never really worked for me. i just couldn't get into bloglines and even preferred my desktop client over it. google reader is great and it shows up right there in the sidebar of my browser every time i open firefox. i also have meebo set up as a sidebar in firefox, so i guess i'd say that i can't live w/out that either! emoticon
