Greetings from one of your new Moderators!
11:52 AM EDT 10/10/06
Hi everyone - just wanted to take a second to introduce myself. My name is Amanda Etches-Johnson and I'm one of the new moderators for the Social Software forum! I'm a Reference Librarian and all-around go-to person for all things web/social software related at McMaster University (Ontario, Canada). I've been a blogger for almost five years (time flies!) and I try to do as much speaking/writing/teaching on social software as I can to, you know, spread the social software love in libraries! At the moment I'm teaching an LIS course in social software & libraries (sensing a theme yet?!) and you can find me online at http://www.blogwithoutalibrary.net.

I look forward to chatting with you all and learning from everyone's experiences in the wonderful world of social software!

Welcome Amanda! This is a hot topic these days and your extensive experience will really help steer the rest of us through the maze. emoticon

I want to promote the online course you'll be team-teaching starting in February --Five Weeks to a Social Library. It looks like people have until December 1st to sign up. Is that true? I'm very tempted to take the course myself.

Hi, Amanda
I'm teaching a class called Blogging for Libraries at the Oklahoma Dept. of Libraries. I've had two sessions of it and it has been very successful so far. I am approaching the subject by encouraging librarians to try blogging as a marketing and advocacy tool, a way to solicit feedback from their communities, and as a way to become more in tune with their younger customers (who will soon be of voting age--hint, hint). I've set the class up so that I show them the basic parts of a blog, different free blogging sites, tagging, RSS feeds and then I let them have a go at creating a blog. So far the response as been positive. We'll see what happens now.

Hi Amanda,

We've been offering Blogging classes here at SELCO in Minnesota for about six months, and have actually taken the class "on the road" to two other regions of the state. We've had a number of libraries who have started blogs as a result, and are using them rather effectively as either their primary web page, or as an addition to their web page.

A list of the SELCO blogs can be found here: http://www.selco.info/about/members/blogs.html

We're in the planning stages for a Blogging II class, which will go into more detail on RSS feeds, aggregators, and Flickr.
