Anyone blogging or have a zine?
Anyone blogging or have a zine?
3:37 PM EDT 5/30/09
Anyone using a blog or webzine as part of their library's web page?

I just started a zine, using the CrimsonZine.com interface. I'm using it to post short articles, such as upcoming programs, new items in the collection, etc. I'm curious to see what types of information others are posting.

I'm still in the learning stages with CrimsonZine, but I'm also using it for a fanzine so at least work at play are meshing together for a change.

Our very new (so not much there) zine is at http://wpl.crimsonzine.com/ if anyone wants to take a look.

Hey Chris,

Very nice. The other responses have given you some of the best, but let me point you to the dmoz category for Organizational Weblogs, where you'll find blogs from a variety of library settings.

A great article--thanks, Greg. I was mistakenly under the impression that a web log was just a diary, and just a waste of my time. Your article has opened my eyes to the professional value of blogs, and the service we can provide to our community. Guess I was behind the times.

I came across a blog yesterday that gave me the giggles, but then I'm easily amused. emoticon

http://refgrunt.blogspot.com/ has the description: "Some days I love working the reference desk, some days I hate it, and it's often the same day." It details the answers from one ref librarian each day.

For example, some entries from a day when the computers were down went like this:

"Can I use an Internet terminal?" Sorry

"Not at all today?" Not at all today.

"Net's down today?" Yep.

Pencil.

"Internet, please." Sorry.

I love it! Thanks for sharing that blog, Chris. It captures the spirit of working the reference desk better than any other words could.

I, too, loved it! So much so that I forwarded the link to all of our reference librarians, along with a link to the Blog article on WJ. I especially loved the line, "Techie Y stops by to mutter something in the tongue of his people." I hadn't thought of my lingo in this way. What a chuckle.

Chris (Cooper),

So glad to hear that you're spreading "the word" on WJ and our collaborative attempts to keep it all in the family ~ lingo's not the only thing we have in common!

Some of my friends come to visit our community (just to see what I'm up to) and they make fun of how we all "speak the same language!"

And thanks for sharing Chris - how is your blog going? Do you think it's an effective tool for your lib?
RE: RE: Blogs

So far, our blog is pretty basic. I'm mainly using it to post new additions to the collection at the moment.

My plan is to post news items that are also in the local paper. Not everyone gets the local paper, and not all of our users are "local" either.

I do know people are reading it, because I've gotten some feedback.

This is most interesting & I understand about "Zines" but can someone point to a good source of information or overview on the "blog" thing. I've heard of it...and the examples shared really are exciting. I can see all kinds of possibilities. But I need to learn more. One quick question...

I see that the blog is web based...but is the idea that it is easily and routinely changed and update? Thus making it ideal for a newsletter type format?

Thanks

Jay

Wow! This is a great thread -- esp. for me at the moment! I am doing a presentation on Jan. 9th that will talk mostly about WebJunction, but they also asked me to cover a little about library blogs! It will be really cool to be able to show off all of WebJunctions areas and features, then move on to Part 2 of the presentation (Blogs) and demonstrate how WebJunction answers this question!

I think this got mentioned before but I thought I'd share it again since the topic seems to have come up once more.

If you want to see some gread examples of library blogs, take a wander over to LISFeeds (http://lisfeeds.com). It has links to lots of library related weblogs, each of which can lead you to more weblogs.

Don't get overhwelmed by the number out there (there are a ton!). After some perusing you can pick and choose which ones you like the best and stick to reading those.

I am really fascinated by the use of blogs in libraries. I think on one hand, it shows patrons that your library is forward thinking and wiling to take a chance on what many considered to be a "fad." On the other hand, I wonder how effective it is. How are libraries promoting their blogs? Off of the Home page? Word of mouth? I also wonder whether anyone has set up a staff-only blog for news about the library...so many possibilities!

The Northern Lights Library Network in Minnesota (a multi-type) uses a blog to highlight early literacy resources (the intended audience is staff at the libraries in the NLLN system). http://nlln.org/kidblog.html
Early literacy is one of their focus areas this year and the blog is part of that effort.

We recently added two new public blogs to our Library Web Page - a genealogy one (genealogy.plymouthlibrary.org) and a teen blog (teenblog.plymouthlibrary.org). I don't really expect folks to comment on the genealogy one, but we are having a tough time getting teens to respond to the one on their page. Any suggestions for librarians who have already done teen blogs?

Hi there!
I think this is a great idea. What kind of promotion or advertising are you doing to the teens? Maybe having teachers mention it in class?

So far we have promoted it at our Teen Advisory Board meetings; our Teen Read Week party, and on our Teen Zone web page. Our quarterly newsletter is due to come out next month and there will be an article on it in that publication. Unfortunately, our school visits were over prior to the blog being launched. Our teen librarian does book talks to various school groups who visit in the library, so I believe she's planning to publicize it then.

We have a weblog that we use within the Information Services department for internal communication. We use it to notify other members of our department of updates in regards to book displays, upcoming events, new reference books, policy changes or any other item that could get lost in the shuffle. We love our departmental blog and it has really helped us server our customers better. It is especially beneficial for our part-time librarians as it helps them stay in "the loop" and allows us to post updates even from home.
We use MoTime as our site... here is the link:

We also have a blog for staff only on our Intranet. We are still using Blogger software since it's so user friendly. I find it a great way to alert staff to new web links I've added to our public Internet page by just imbedding the links into the message. We've also used it to announce staff parties and other general interest items that often get missed by our substitute librarians and interns. Find it at http://pdlstaffblog.blogspot.com/

nice work! you'll have to tell us how your project goes.

i found blogging to be a bit of a daunting task at first. sometimes it still makes me nervous. if i have doubts about anything i'm posting, or think it might be controversial, i talk with my colleagues about it first before i send it out to the public. but now that i blog more often, it's a bit easier and i actually enjoy exploring new ideas, and trying out new things.

blogging to a smaller, more intimate group should be a little less intimidating.

walt crawford just recently published an article called "Life Trumps Blogging" that pretty much says "everything is ok when it comes to blogging." So, dig in - and have a good time. I hope your staff enjoys it as well.

Cheers! - and thanks for joining us.

I'm wondering if anyone has a model blogging policy to recommend.

I'd like to get a library blog started in a few months. The Board is behind it -- a couple of the members use blogs at work.

I've got the content side pretty much covered ... something from a different department at least once a week.

The real problem is making sure that we can, by policy, erase offensive public postings.

This is a sticky issue for sure. I'm not sure how many libraries have thought through this aspect of diving into the blogosphere. In a quick search, I only found one example of an online library blog policy:
St. Petersburg College Library Blog Policy.

And there's the LITA blog policy].

I found some interesting reflections on the problem. They're not specifically from the library world, but the points made are quite relevant. In Crafting the Ideal Business Blog Comment Strategy, the author states that "if a blog has a recognizable business sponsor or individual shepherd, then everything on the blog has an implied ownership, a brand identity, of that owner."

In Can Bloggers Be Sued Over Comments? Maybe, this statement got my attention:
"If you moderate or edit comments to your blog in any way you're probably assuming legal liability for the content of those comments."
The author issues the caveat that this is in no way official legal advice.

I hope that those libraries that have taken the plunge into blogs with public comments will share their experiences and policies.

Or you can craft one and share it with us, librarybob! You have been the source of so many good ideas here. emoticon

I'm afraid it may come to that. I've written a couple "Rules of the Road" for public conference-type communities (like WebJunction), but nothing for either 1) blogs or 2) tax supported libraries.

Just wondering ... any feedback on the Blogger's Code of Conduct?

http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2007/04/draft_bloggers_1.html

It seems important to those of us working "for the public." Usenet standards (which is to say, none) probably shouldn't apply.

I thought I might mention an online friend's newest (big!) pdf production, The Law of the Blog.

There's a lot of things to be thought about when blogging in a very public place for a very public institution.

We have recently started a blog at the Alpine Public Library. The web site is called: www.alpinelibrarynews.org. Everyone is more than welcome to come and take a look. Please post replies and give feedback.

The challenge has been making it known to our local community and possibly beyond. If anyone has any suggestions on how to better accomplish that, please respond to the thread regarding: How do I make our library blog more visible?

Thanks so much. And, thanks for everyone posting their blog and website addresses. Our Director really encourages us to get to know other libraries and familiarize ourselves with their websites. It makes us feel more like part of the library community since we live in such a remote area.
