This is not library specific, but I think there will be a lot of food for thought for librarians. Mark your calendars for TechSoup’s free day-long online event Wed. May 14th: Online Activism: Social Media Tools for Social Change in the TechSoup online forums. http://www.techsoup.org/go/socialmedia

Dive into the conversation with hosts Heather Mansfield, owner of DIOSA Communications and Online Community Manager for Change.org and Carie Lewis, Internet Marketing Manager for the Humane Society of the United States, as they explore the ins and outs of using social networking sites and strategies for determining how, why, and when to use different applications to broadcast your message. In discussing the dos and don’ts of effectively fundraising and promoting your cause, we’ll also look at lessons learned from successful (and not so successful) online campaigns.

Join us Wed. May 14, for a free, one-day online event, in the TechSoup Emerging Technologies Forum as we discuss issues such as:
* How do social networking sites fit in with other outreach efforts?

* Are the benefits worth the time needed to keep up a social networking presence?

* How can you translate online activism into on-the-ground action towards change?

*Is it ever a good idea for organizations to start their own social networking sites?

Take part in the discussion Wed. May 14th in the TechSoup Emerging Technologies Forum:

This event is asynchronous (not live). No registration is required, just show up and post!

I had computer issues and ended up not participating. Did you go? Did you find it useful/interesting?

I was able to pop in for two brief periods later in the day. I basically posted an intro and looked around. Unfortunately, I got really busy and couldn't give it the time I wanted.

I think both a plus and minus of the asynchronous conference is that you can come and go as you please. Like a message board, you can fit it around your schedule, take the time to reflect on topics, and approach the event at your own speed. On the other hand, I think the nature of a conference sort of calls for a somewhat captive audience. For example, I _planned_ to participate more during the actual event, but knowing the info would be there for me _later_ allowed me to mentally push the event off my plate when my day got full.

All that aside, it looks like some great stuff came out of the conference. I plan to return and read more over the next couple weeks. I recommend anyone interested in this online community stuff (all of us?) should check it out!
