Facebook as a tool for librarians
4:05 PM EST 12/31/08
I feel that facebook can be a great tool for libraries. One librarian I know sends out notices/invites for all of the upcoming programs through facebook. It helps spread the word to those who may not be in a library very often (to see the posted signs) but would enjoy the programs.

Excellent point! I think though the only thing to keep in mind would be the demographics of your users. For instance, college students and teens down to pre-teens would be a great segment to target with this idea. However, older users are less likely to use Facebook. I know of other libraries who have successfully implemented it and had great success, as you pointed out with your example. The only other thing would be thinking of ways to get the word out, so that users would join the group, and thus know about the services. Maybe, it could be something to push to your users, to make sure they are in the know by recommending that if they are on Facebook that they consider joining the group. Once, you have a large segment of users on Facebook, then it is very effective as a marketing tool, since if the date or time needs to be changed you can easily do it, whereas with printed signs you have to reprint the signs and there is less of a chance that everyone will see the signs. Great idea though, no doubt!
