Locking Down Computers with the Shared Computer Toolkit
Microsoft recently released a free, downloadable security tool developed with the needs of librarians and schoolteachers in mind. The purpose of the Shared Computer Toolkit (SCT) is to make public access computers more reliable and easier to maintain by preventing unauthorized changes to the hard disk, and limiting the privileges of untrusted users (e.g. library patrons). For those familiar with the computers granted by the Gates Foundation, the SCT is the successor to the security tool on those workstations, which was known as the Public Access Security Tool (PAC Tool).
