New Gates PAC Security Tool - discuss here!
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
I know some of you are tooling around with Gates' new security tool. What's going on out there? Is it good, bad, ugly, all of the above? Tell all!

It is a breeze to install and setup.
It is also a lot easier to make changes too once it has been installed.
We are VERY pleased with it here.

I think Chad is installing on Win2k. I just wanted to remind everyone that the tool works only on 2k and XP Pro (not XP home or NT)

Yes, all of out GATES PCs are Win 2K Pro (MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN NT, SO UPGRADE WHEN YOU CAN!) and we have 6 non-GATES we set up as "semi-GATES" clones, running Win 2K Pro and Office.

RE: Security Tool Question

We are setting up some non-Gates PCs (with the security tool) for our Childrens room.
I installed several games that we already owned and all worked well in the admin profile, but I would get some sort of dirdib.drv not writing to the Windows folder error in the child profile and the game would not load.
This only happened on two of about 15 games.
Thanks - Chad
Any ideas?

RE: RE: Security Tool Question

You are having a file permission problem. You will need to locate that file and give explicit access rights for the users or group that access it. If you give the Users group Change permission on that file, the games may work for the profiles created by the Public Profile Creator. If that does not do it you may have to go further and give the Change permission at the Directory level instead. If you ease up the permissions at the directory level by granting the Users group Change, you will lose some security on your machine as any user in the Users group can then modify any file in that directory. That is the trade off when getting different applications to run. Good luck.

PAC Tool Installed on WinXP

I will be setting up 9 non gates machines using the PAC Security Tool. I have gotten my configuration done on one machine and am now trying to copy to ther other machines. I am running into problems with security of the profiles folder. Apparently since the folder is on c:\profiles my user does not have access to that folder. I have setup user all. When I log in as all, I get a message that it was unable use profiles for security reason. Since computer is in workgroup mode it doesn't let me change security on profiles folder. Any one ran into this and know of a fix?
Thanks!

I got my answer from PA computing.
Computers running the Windows XP operating system: make sure the following local security policy is set before performing the installation:
Click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy.
In the Local Security Settings window, click Local Policies > Security Options > System Objects.
Set Default owner for objects created by members of the Administrators group to Administrators group.
-----------
The instructions should mention this when you get to the second pc, but the draft instructions don't.
You will also need to go to Add/Remove programs and remove the Public Access Computer Profile Restrictions and Public Access Computer Profiles. Then run the PPM again and reinstall the profiles.

Ah! Hello kauffej - and thanks for posting your findings.
And yes, welcome to the conversation WebJunction. 'Tis great to have you back so that your question/answer can help others working with the security tool. You fit in well already, as folks around here are pretty friendly and helpful. (If you're inclined, tell us about yourself in the "getting started" forum!)
Welcome, welcome.

RE: Problem with copying using removable media

Hello, I could use some help.
I'm trying to copy the public profile to a new WinXP. Both computers have rewritable CD drives, but when I try to use them, the copier tells me that 'there are no removable media available'. Are they not 'high capacity' enough? If so, I need help with how to set up the computers to share so that I can do it from the network. (both are XP).
TIA!

Paula-
This is addressed in the new, finished instructions that should be posted by Monday.
If you use a CD burner, you can't use the Public Profile Copier, because the computer doesn't identify a burner as a 'removeable drive.'
What you can do is just double-click on the Profile Manager Fels icon on the desktop, and copy the entire contents to the burner software and burn them do disk. Then on the next computer, just copy and paste from the CD to the Profile Manager Files folder.

We have 4 new Gateway 600E Series notebook computers that have Windows XP Operating System. They also have a CD/DVD burner installed on them. Will the PAC Security tool work on these notebooks just as they will on the desktops? Thanks for your reply.

Lucy- Yes, the tool will work on a laptop just as well as a desktop, assuming it has XP Pro (not Home) and the other system requirements. Also, fyi - the final version of the instructions for the Tool should be posted later today. It has more detail about system requirements and customizing profiles. Dale

I installed the Security Tool on 2 XP Professional computers.I put a shortcut to the a drive on the desktop. The shortcut doesn't work. Also when I tried to put shortcuts to the progams I wanted on the desktop left click wouldn't work. I had to open the program and add a shortcut from there. How can I fix the a drive?

OK, we found out something new about XP. When you create the shortcut to a floppy or Zip drive, you must have a disk in the drive at the time.
So to fix it, just delte the one that is there, put a disk in the drive and create a new shortcut.
I'm not following the second part about shortcuts to programs, and left-click not working. Could you give more details?
