Norton Antivirus and Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit
5:40 PM EDT 10/16/06
I would like my pac computers to update their norton antivirus automatically. However, unless you are logged in as administrator, this does not happen. I've tried changing the permissions under Program Files for the Norton folder allowing power users and everyone full rights, but that doesn't seem to help. Of course, on the Shared Computer Toolkit, the C drive is locked down for the pac users. Is there a way to make this work. I have 5 branch libraries and there is no way I can go to each one every week to update. I need to have this run on its own. I'm looking into getting Computer Associates when my Norton runs out, because I understand it uses "push" technology to update the virus protection, but until then I need to make this work. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I'm just so frustrated and have run out of things to try! Thanks

The one way I know to do this is through the Windows Disk Protection feature of the toolkit - any chance you're using it? If you are, take a look at chapter 6 in the handbook.

If you aren't using WDP, then I'm not sure what the answer is. This isn't really even about the C: drive being locked down. My understanding is that with Norton, you can only run LiveUpdate from an administrator account.

One way to try to get around it would be to schedule updates to happen in the evening, after the library is closed, and have someone on staff log them in to an admin account and leave them on all night. Of course that means being able to get that done reliably.

Anyone else found a way to run Norton LiveUpdates more automatically?

This was covered in a previous thread, but it is not obvious if it ever got resolved, although scripts were written to make it work - may also be a different version from what you have -

We use Corporate Edition, with the server pushing out updated definition files to our public PCs. So far there have been no problems...
