Problem With Norton AV
9:35 AM EST 11/12/04
We purchased the a number of 5 license packs of Norton AV from Techsoup and I installed it on our GLC's. (Texas, upgraded by me to XP, no CG).
Here are my problems.
1. I have scheduled a full scan to run every Sunday at 3 am. It isn't running. I suspect it is because no one is logged into the machine at that time.
2. Although the auto live-update is working, it keeps giving people in our public account messages saying the virus defs are out of date. I opened up Norton AV in my all account and it showed the virus defs were from Sept. When I go into my administrator account, it shows current virus defs.
We are using the Gates Security Tool.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any way to get Norton AV to scan, even if no one is logged on? I know McAfee was able to do this. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the Public Account to show the same status of NAV as the administrator account?
Thanks, Wendell

Wendell, unfortunately I don't have a solution - I'm just here to commiserate. After I upgraded to XP-SP2 on my solo PC, I started getting the virus out of date notices from my OS too. I keep checking my virus updates, it's always upadated, but I haven't taken the time to try and figure out how to get the 2 to work together. I use McAfee, so I believe the problem is with XP. Maybe others have run into this problem and already have a solution that will work both for a solo PC running XP + Anti-virus software; and for your admin/public disconnect. I'm hoping...
In the meantime, it's great to hear when libraries are taking advantage of the new TechSoup deals.

Wendell,
I think this may help you. It looks like the NAV service and the schedule scan jobs dont have sufficient rights to run the updates / scans in your non-administrator profiles. Check the following:
- Go to Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks. Right click the NAV scheduled task that appears and select Properties. - In the main tab (TASK) make sure that Administrator is set as the default in the "Run As" Option and it has the correct password. - Go to the "Security" tab and make sure the following have rights to run and execute the program: Administrator, System, Users. (If the Security Tab does not appear, you have to disable "Use Simple File Sharing" in the folders option in explorer) - Also check that all associated NAV services in the Service module (Under Run, type services.msc)have sufficient rights. You can change this setting in the "Log On" tab, select THIS ACCOUNT: and enter Administrator user and password.
BTW, are your workstations loaded with SP2? Is the notification a Windows warning or a Norton pop-up? If its a windows warning then you have the option to hide the Windows Security Center balloon Tip that appears. Under admin, if your definitions show up as updated, then you are ok. It's probably a bug with SP2 and the PAC security tool that causes windows security tool to think that your definitions are out of date. Hope this helps

Hello everyone my name is Kenji D'Aguiar and I work for the Brevard County Library Systems in Florida. I've been with my department for a year working as a PC technician and also as an admin for our Web filtering & Asset management systems. I have a hospitality background as a 5-Star concierge prior to entering the world of computers. I learned of WJ thru the PACompting website a while ago, but I recently found out that WJ also carries a forums site that supports RSS feeds. This is a great feature to have! Anyway, I'm looking forward to being an active member of these forums and lending my support when needed. Have a great day!

I drop by our local public library every couple of weeks and check on our 14 systems, so I purchased the Symantec (Norton) Corporate version off our state contract. Worked out to less than $15 each. Installed the server portion then setup each client to be managed by the server. Now I login to the server and check on the status of each client. Does everything I want except e-mail me when it finds a problem. Probably could do that, too, but I haven't been willing to go further. We're running XP-SP2 and the PAC tool.
