Symantec Anti-Virus Corp Edition on GLCs
11:16 AM EDT 10/12/04
I'm not sure if this the right forum, but does anyone have any experience running Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition on GLCs? I'm trying to get our director to allow me to install it, since we have no up to date AV software on them at this point.

There's nothing really special about doing this on a GLC, other than dealing with the Centurion Guard.

You need to do manual updates, or schedule updates for an evening when you have unlocked the CG's, or probably best, get the CG network manager from www.centuriontech.com and have the server unlock the pc's, do the update and lock them back down.

OK, I'll show my ignorance---what is a GLC? Next, why do you have to unlock the Centurion Guard to get antivirus updates?

Sorry, GLC = Gates Library Computer

You don't have to unlock to get the updates, you only have to unlock if you want the updates to still be there after you reboot.

OK, so if I have my NAV Corp Edition set to get automatic updates every day at 3:00 AM (when I'm not here and the Centurion Guard is locked) it gets the updates but they are lost when I reboot? When I shutdown, unlock CG, reboot and open as exec and go to NAV it shows the most current update is there, so I figured it was updating and keeping the most current update automatically, but I can see that not unlocking the CG would prevent it from saving it on the hard drive. Now, Dale, ha-ha, does that mean I have to come in early once a week to do NAV updates?

Bobbie-

If NAV does it's updates automatically when the CG is locked, and then after restarting, you look at NAV and it shows the latest update is there, then it is in fact there and saved to the hard drive.

What this means is the Centurion Guard is never really working. You are in CO, so you guys had to install the CG yourselves. I'm assuming you're using our Win2k update image. When the CG is in the locked position, do you see the red key icon in the system tray?

The red key should only show up when the CG is unlocked, when locked it should disappear. If the red key is always there, then the CG is not working. The most common reason is the floppy cable that goes from motherboard to CG to floppy is either bad or not connected correctly. If you are experiencing what I described, check to see if the floppy drive works.

Otherwise, if the CG is working, you could just unlock and reboot at the end of the day before the night it updates itself, and leave them unlocked all night.

Yes, Dale, you are right - as always!!! I did install the CGs myself and I also did all the upgrades from NT to Win 2K. And yes the red key only shows when the CG is unlocked.

What we found out is the NAV is updating daily and new definitions are there and available, i.e. 10/13/04. However, when we shutdown-unlock CG-reboot and go in as exec, the date on the NAV is earlier (shows 10/12/04) than what it showed before we rebooted. Therefore, the updates are being done in the all profile, but are not permanent until I unlock CG and reboot and go in as exec then the updates come in and are permanent.

I've been shutting down-unlocking CG-rebooting in exec once a week. Is this often enough?

Also I go in the first of each month and check for Windows and Office updates. Is this often enough?

Correction to Symantec Anti-Virus Corp Edition on GLCs
11:55 AM EDT 10/28/04 as a reply to Bobbie Chapman.
I need to make a correction: What we found out is the NAV is updating daily and new definitions are there and available, i.e. 10/13/04. However IF WE RESTART THE COMPUTER without unlocking CG first, the definitions go back to the date (10/12/04)when we last time we unlocked the CG and went in as exec.

That is how we found out that we must shutdown-unlock CG-restart-go in as exec once a week to make that week's NAV definitions permanent.

This solves the problem and I know how to do it correctly now. Thanks,
Bobbie

Yes, this is all about the CG, and has nothing to do with the profiles.

Just to give you a couple of options, here are two ways you can deal with this:

1. Set NAV to update in the middle of the night and at the end of the day, unlock the CG and reboot, then lock and reboot in the morning. If you do this, you might as well also set Windows Automatic Updates to check for updates each night as well.

2. If you want to get fancy, there is a Network Control Manager for the CG that you can get for free from Centurion (see http://www.centuriontech.com/nclm-about.htm ). This allows you to unlock and reboot the pc's remotely from any one computer on the network. This would also allow you to set the entire process of unlocking, updating, relocking to happen every night automatically. I imagine there are librarians around here who have done this.

Pardon the late reply, but we bought SAV Corporate about 15 months ago and it's been great. We don't have Centurion Guard, so that's not an issue. We bought it off a state contract for <$15 each. Set it up on the server and it manages each client. I drop by every two weeks or so and login to the server and check on the status of the weekly scans, updates, and threats caught in between scans. Only thing I haven't pursued is accessing the server remotely or having it e-mail me when it sees a problem. Good luck, Dave.

Dave, thanks for the update. It's great to know that you found such a workable solution. emoticon

If you upgrade your Centurion Guard to their new product - CornerStone, you can save the VirusDefs folder to the partition it creates and edit the Windows Registry to reflect where the VirusDefs is now located. Then you don't have to do anything! Joy oh joy oh joy!

*We also got a discount by returning the Centurion Guard and DriveShield hardware we were using.
