McAfee VirusScan 6.x and Gates XP

Is anyone else using these two together?
My problem is that the a Status Dialog sometimes pops up after logging to Windows XP and just before SAM (patron time management system) kicks in so there's no chance to close it. While there is zero risk to have this dialog up after the patron logs in, regular library staff find it troublesome.
I've played around with the Configuration Settings (with the drive unlocked and logged in as exec) but no luck. It's irritating too because it doesn't always happen and yet I can't seem to find the rhyme or reason for when it does or does not.
Finally, what's the popular virus protection among you Gates folks?
