We had a Family Fun night where parents and kids ate watermelons while listening to "Just Rewards" and "Icy Watermelon." We also made watermelons out of torn paper and had a seed spitting contest.

We also had a wonderful turnout for our Quinceañera Fashion Show, where local business donated clothing and hairstyling for area kids to model while a community member narrated the significance of the clothing and the event.

Our salsa contest did not fare quite as well, but we had a good response to our trivia contest. Both events had gift cards from local businesses so we could encourage community participation.

We'd like to involve our Hispanic Chamber of Commerce next year, and we'd love to hear from others on their activities.

CArol Kotsch
Children's Librarian
Evergreen Branch
Wichita, KS
303-8181

ESL Family Bilingual Library Tour Power Points

These are the Power Points for an ESL family tour we offered at the Whitehall branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library through a partnership with a local ESL teacher. We are also presenting a bilingual story time and we have acquired a Spanish language newspaper, Tejanita. Our story times have traditionally been offered to the community every Thursday at ten in the morning for pre-school age kids. We are attempting to gently introduce Spanish language and culture by encouraging inclusiveness in the library and community. We believe this is very important to start doing while children are still so young. A portion of the students are from bilingual families. We also work with a daycare center, Head Start and a nursery school. Paxton is a working class community, so many families are not able to personally bring their kids in and it is necessary at times for me to go outside of the library to read books and talk with the children.

How do families know about these story times?

It is, at times, advertised in the local newspaper and on our website. We talk about the fact that we are all people, we all have things in common and we all belong. We are planting the seeds of kindness and tolerance for all beings. I have to admit I was a bit stumped. I asked our curriculum designer Yolanda Cuesta for her insight and here is what she had to say:
"Mother's Day in Mexico (always on May 10)is a very special event but I do not recall that the giving of gifts is a big part of it. Traditionally, children honor their mothers by memorizing and presenting poems in public, a sort of dramatic presentation or recital, not a reading. Schools often organize open air programs where children dramatize their poems. In small towns these are often done in the town placita so everyone gets to see and enjoy the event. There are often concerts and dances as well. But the main way that children honor their mothers is by learning, memorizing, and dramatizing a poem in their honor."

Poetry at the library! Sounds like a great idea.
