Hi Carol - Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I have to admit I was a bit stumped. I asked our curriculum designer Yolanda Cuesta for her insight and here is what she had to say:
"Mother's Day in Mexico (always on May 10)is a very special event but I do not recall that the giving of gifts is a big part of it. Traditionally, children honor their mothers by memorizing and presenting poems in public, a sort of dramatic presentation or recital, not a reading. Schools often organize open air programs where children dramatize their poems. In small towns these are often done in the town placita so everyone gets to see and enjoy the event. There are often concerts and dances as well. But the main way that children honor their mothers is by learning, memorizing, and dramatizing a poem in their honor."

Poetry at the library! Sounds like a great idea. I also asked the REFORMA listserv for thoughts and someone sent me this link: http://www.dltk-kids.com/world/mexico/index.htm
It provides great ideas for traditional Mexican craft projects.
