International librarians forum

Hello,

Bienvendios a Queens http://www.bienvenidosaqueens.org/index-english.asp ,
a bilingual web site that the Queens library put together, provides information on health, immigration, English classes and other topics. It looks like it would be fairly easy for a Spanish speaker to navigate this site and find very helpful information such as how to get a library card or navigate the Dewey Decimal system in Spanish. This is a good example of how a library can use technology to serve the needs of Spanish speakers. Although the site is specific to the Queens and the surrounding area, it has some great information that applies to all types of libraries. I found out about this on the International Libraries forum http://webjunction.org/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=137

Rose, thanks for making this connection and for contributing to the International Libraries forum!

Pilar and Enzo, our guest moderators from Chile, had some great insights on implementing the public access computing program there. Pilar noted that the website for the BiblioRedes Chile has all of their training materials online. I would think that many of their resources could be of use to the SLO projects here in the US.

Hello. I am Loida Garcia-Febo and I manage the Spanish Language Collections for Queens Library's New Americans Program. I am glad to see that Rose posted a message on Bienvenidos a Queens. The site is very popular with our Spanish-speaking customers.

Does anyone knows of any other library providing online relevant local information for customers who does not speak English or the country's official language?

Hi Loida,

Thanks for jumping into the conversation. I too would be interested to know if there are other libraries out there who are providing relevant local online content for their customers who don't speak English.

The El Portal Latino, the Spanish Language web site of the Suffolk County Public Libraries, NY (http://latino.suffolk.lib.ny.us/index.html )has a lot of great content but I am not sure how much of the info is localized. It looks like it also links to your site.

My guess is that many libraries are struggling to make their own sites available in other languages and aren't yet able to provide the depth of content that your library provides. Kudos to you for being on the leading edge.
