Teaching Basic Computer skills
3:10 PM EST 1/17/05
My assistant who is bi-lingual and I, will be teaching basic computer skills for our Hispanic patrons. We have been partnering with Lincoln Land Community College and the literacy program. The patrons we will be teaching attend Parents Night one night a month at the library. We have established a rapport with this small group. They would prefer Ricardo and myself to teach them the basics then switch to the college basic level when they feel more comfortable. I have found information in Spanish to teach the classes, but really need the English version for myself. I could have Ricardo translate, but feel you may have something on Web Junction that I have overlooked in my search. Any suggestions? Tammy

Hi Tammy,
Have you had a chance to look at our learning center? http://webjunction.org/do/LearningCenter?method=getCourseCatalog
We offer quite a few basic computer classes in English, and although they aren't lesson plans, they may be helpful. I know some of our trainers and/or their libraries have taught computer classes, so hopefully someone will have a good resource for you. I'll send an email to the trainers about this now....
Good luck with the program!
-Erin

Hi Tammy, me again. I found a site with easy-to-understand instructions for basic computer usage. http://www.aps.edu/aps/sw_depart/basicskills/
I think this may be helpful too!

Hi Erin, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will check the sites out. I have to share with you an experience from the Family Lit. Thursday night... I had to present a program on how to use the library and our Data base to our Hispanic families. I had created a presentation from power point and my assistant translated for me. Well, the technology(equipment) decided not to work...so, had to change my presentation off the cuff...LOL !! Must have been meant to be. The group was fantastic, how they interacted with me. Before they left they thanked me for being so kind to the Hispanic Community. I have to say that touched my heart. The families were kind and humble. What a blessing that night turned out to be. Take care, Tammy

Hi Tammy,
At the Orange County Library System, we teach computer basic skills in Spanish. We offer Computer Basics and How to use the mouse and keyboard. They are one time classes and the patrons have the option of repeating them the number of times they consider it necessary. In Computer Basics we teach topics such as: Introduction to Computers, Hardware vs. Software, Using the Mouse, Moving around the Desktop with the Keyboard, Exploring the Desktop Environment, Working with Windows, Using My Computer, Exiting Windows and a Practice Exercise using the mouse. In How to use the mouse and keyboard, we teach the different keys on the keyboard, their function and at the end we have a practice exercise. There is a very good dictionary with computer terms: Diccionario de Términos de Computación, ISBN: 970-17-0200-X. This dictionary has the terms in English and their correspondent translation and definition in Spanish.
Tammy, I hope that this information be helpful for you. Good luck!
Martha

Hi Tammy, Not sure if this is helpful, but in the first Spanish Outreach program that we offered a couple of years ago, the trainer and staff at his library created this "Computer Comfort" handout in both Spanish and English. It's a very basic guide to computers. I am attaching both versions to this list. If it's useful to you and others, I can post it to the WebJunction CO site. Rose

Rose, I am very thankful to all of you for your help. I am starting the class the second week of Feb. We will go for 4 weeks. If the students need to repeat the class until they are comfortable, then we will. I am very excited about this endeavor. Tammy

Hi Rose, I noticed on the computer site that someone was interested in teaching basic computer skills to the ESL students. I took the liberty and told them about the Spanish Outreach site. I also, thanked you all for your suggestions. I have printed out all the info I have garnered from all of you. I plan on making up my own lesson plans to meet the needs of this particular class. I am very appreciative of everyone's suggestions. Thank you all! Tammy
