MS Office cost
12:55 PM EDT 4/27/06
I'm at a branch public library, and I'm wondering whether my library system is paying too much for licenses for MS Office Pro 2003. It's my understanding that public libraries get academic pricing. Whenever I add a computer and purchase a new license, the county charges me $346. I know the schools don't pay this much.

So what does a license on a single computer for Office cost you? What's the right price?

That does sound expensive. I assume you are talking about staff computers here? Of course you can get copies for your public access computers through the library program at TechSoup for $8 a copy, but those are for PACs only.

Anyone else have a good source?

That's not just staff computers, that's for the public Internet computers and word processors too. I appreciate any guidance you pass on, since obviously the administration doesn't know. Thanks.

OK, then absolutely - for all your public access compters, you should be getting MS Office through the MS US Library Software Donation Program at TechSoup:
http://www.techsoup.org/stock/libraries/microsoft/default.asp

You should read the description there carefully - your library is only allowed to order once a year, and there are a few other restrictions. You also need to sign up for an account yourself, plus register your library. And finally make sure you order from the library catalog - not the Non-Profit Organization catalog.

But since it will save you $338 a copy, it's probably worth it. And then you do still need another source for your staff computers.
