Compatibility issues -Word, Works, Wordperfect etc.

Hi everyone,

We're experiencing recurring problems with being able to translate some kinds of files patrons bring in on disks into Microsoft Word. We've installed all the "filters" MS has for this, and we've tried using OpenOffice on a staff machine to open some of these to no avail. These seem to include MS "Works" and WordPerfect files, or at least those for some versions of these applications. Is anyone else running up against these issue often? Any hints? Is this just going to be true for some segment of these files no matter what?

My experience is that there does seem to be a certain segment of these that you might not be able to convert. For Word you can download converter packs from MS, but they only cover back to Works 4 and Wordperfect 5. That is actually pretty far back, but there will always be someone with something older.

The other issue I've noticed with Works is that people don't always know if they have a word processing document or a spreadsheet.

I've seen reference to standalone converter applications, but i haven't ever used any of them.
