Language Problem in Word 2000
4:30 PM EDT 8/30/04
Hello. I am encountering a "weird" problem with our 4 Gates computers. The computers run Windows 2000 OS and have Office 2000 Premium installed.

On Friday, staff noticed that when you go into Word and then go to File/New there are extra tabs (one is Resume) and also we have the standard tabs (Publications, Reports, Other Documents, etc). But the problem is that these are in different languages- Chinese, Arabic, etc and does not look like the standard English options. We have cloned the computers with a "correct" hard drive from a computer in another library, but the problem still remains even after the clone. These computers were locked with the Centurion Guard on and also the profiles restrictions were installed. Has anyone come across this problem before? Help is needed!! Thanks. BoNiTa

Lucy-

May I assume you are in a state that was upgraded from Windows NT to Windows 2000?

What you are seeing is an artifact of us having installed all available Windows and Office language packs. On the Windows 2000 model, unlike the old NT model, you can log on as 'language' and select one of 28 languages to work in. And if you want to work in Spanish, you just log in as 'spanish' and it's already all set.

The one weird thing about this is what you are noticing in the Word templates. Each language pack adds it's own templates and many of these use their own tab structure as well.

The workaround we ended up with on your models is that we copied all the English Language templates to the General tab, which is the first one they see when going to File>New. Have staff tell patrons to just ignore all the other tabs.
