FTP

Hi all,
I have a question about FTP and hope you can help.

When you need to use FTP, do you use your browser (IE or Netscape) or do you use FTP client software like WS_FTP?

What are the advantages/reasons for using client software rather than simply using the browser?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions emoticon

Hi Brenda,
This a good question because I too wonder about this. I have used both but I find that the browser version is easier (most of the time) to use...because you can usually copy/paste, etc. easier.

Back in the olden days I used ftp clients - seemed like a good thing at the time.

But just recently I set up an ftp directory to share files with a school project team, and after trying both, I realized that it was much easier to just use IE.

Theoretically, an ftp client gives you more flexibility to use non-standard ports, etc. But to me, the really useful thing of an ftp for what I want, is to be able to access it from any pc, which means using a browser. And you can still drag-and-drop, and set a user name and password that IE will remember if you want, so I ended up just uninstalling the ftp client.

The browser version of FTP is often easier, but it is usually more limited than using an ftp client. If I remember correctly, IE has a limit as to how big a file can be transferred. With most ftp software, there is no limit and the transfer often goes much faster.
