Eddy, thanks for your post (and welcome!).
The PAComputing site says that "With a few exceptions, IE 5.5 is identical to IE 6.0. If you already have IE 5.5 and don't have a specific reason for upgrading to IE 6, it's recommended that you keep your existing browser." It seems that the reasons are that you may lose some of your Internet settings when you upgrade. You can follow their instructions to save your settings by running the scripts in the article "Upgrading to Internet Explorer 6.0"
Thanks for your post - I encourage you to intro yourself in the "Getting Started" forum, and let us know about your experiences on All Aboard. You can always email community@webjunction.org with comments or suggestions.
Thanks,
Chrystie

I know there is a way to copy my Internet favorites from my old machine to my new one, but I?m not sure how to do it. Has anyone else done this?

Upgrading IE to 6.0

I'm wondering how important it is to upgrade our existing browsers to IE 6.0; will it really make a difference?

We use the automatic updates system that microsoft has, which automatically notifies you when new versions of IE come out. This works really well for us, though I'm not sure exactly what benefits IE 6 has over the earlier versions.
Go to www.microsoft.com/downloads to do the update, or setup the automatic update thing.

Click on file in the upper left of IE.
Choose the Import and Export option and just follow the prompts. You will be Exporting in this case.
I generally back up to a floppy (A: drive) once a week or so just to be safe.
To transfer to another machine simply pop in the desk and do the same thing, using Import this time!
Hope this helps.

You can also backup the files by going to WINNT\Profiles\{profile name}\Favorites in WinNT. Just select which profile you want to back up.
In Win 98, it's just WINDOWS\Favorites.
This especially is nice to know if you do a user file backup. You can select just the bookmarks files to be backed up this way, instead of an entire program directory.

We've upgraded ours, but I haven't really noticed any difference in the browser itself.
We also use the automatic updates. A word of caution -- after a recent update, including the one to IE 6, we apparently lost some service pack information. Not sure of the how/why, but we were being plagued with Blue Screen of Death errors at least once a week. After talking with Gates Support, I reran the service pack, and so far everything seems to be working.

Has anyone been following the AOL/Mozilla/Netscape happenings?
We currently offer Mozilla on our public machines.

This is still a BETA correct?
I am using it and the pop up killer does work well, not to mention I use GOOGLE about a zillion times per day as well.
Great idea to mention this though!

RE: AOL & Mozilla

I've been following a little bit via online news sites. Apparently Netscape is now dead, or at least in a deep coma. No new updates in the future, but Mozilla will be taking up the slack.
We use IE on the library computers (mainly because I never took the time to load anything else on our Gates machines), but I used Netscape at home until about a year ago when I switched to Mozilla.
My only problem with Mozilla is I'd been using ad blockers with Netscape and IE, but they don't work with Mozilla. I *loathe* flashing pop-ups, they give me a headache. I figure there's a blocker for Mozilla as well, but I haven't had a chance to research yet. Anyone have recommendations?

Mozilla actually has a built in pop-up blocker. It works fairly well, although nothing is fool-proof these days.
We are moving away from Netscape and to Mozilla, as an alternative to IE, if patrons choose to use it.
The newer versions of Netscape offered too many customizable bells and whistles we did not want patrons "playing" with and some of the older versions simply will not display newer web pages properly.

Finally a free pop-up killer that works!

as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
My name is Aaron, from the Reference Department in the Taunton Public Library. I would like to share something to those in the library field who hate dealing with popup advertisements on public internet computers. The new Google Tool Bar has an excellent pop up stopper, the best I've seen. So far, it has worked like a charm for us and I am sure this will be useful. Please post your thoughts if you decide to install it.

RE: Mozilla and pop-up blockers

as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I tried using Mozilla's pop-up blocker, but I couldn't find a way to unblock certain sites. There are a few sites that use pop-up screens that are not ads.
I just read in another thread about Google's new beta update of their toolbar. I've been using the original for a while now, but I hadn't heard about the update. It has a pop-up blocker built in, so I'll test it on the staff machines before loading it onto the public ones.

Aaron, thanks for posting this! I've been using the Google toolbar for ages, but only on the staff machines and at home.
I didn't know there was a new version, and the pop-up blocker is a great addition.
I've been using one freebie version, but it doesn't work very well. It blocks "after the fact" (it closes the window after it's open). There's a lag there, and often times the new pop-ups stop me from typing while they're in the process of closing.

Not sure if this helps Chris, but it only works with IE 6.0 and nothing lesser. I have installed it on our public access Internet stations and it works great.

Opera

as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I've been trying OPERA as a browser to see how it works on various machines. It is a free download [if you don't mind their banner ads, up top]. While, I enjoy using it. However, I have not installed it on any public machines yet, b/c there seem to be too many sites that it is not easily compatible with. If a site doesn't work, you have the option to have OPERA ask for the website emulating other browsers, then you can view the site. However, to me, this is not for the technically inept and will lead to major frustrations on our general patrons part. Ergo, I have not tried it on the Patron machines yet.

Mozilla is free, has a built in pop up killer, and no ads. So far no one has seemed to have any issues with it.

Has anyone been able to install the beta version of the Google toolbar on an NT system?
I had the original version of it on the circ computer, but cannot get the beta to install on it or any of our other NT based machines -- which is all of our public ones.
I did install it on my win98 workstation without a hitch, and the blocker works great.
