Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, etc.
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
We are having problems with Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail users and now are experiencing problems with AOL accounts. It seems that when a patron logs on to hotmail.com and enters their address and password they get an error message saying "this page cannot be displayed." I can't track it to see if it is a cookie problem or something else. Has anyone else had this problem and figured out a solution? We've already tried creating a favorite that links directly to the Hotmail login URL and tried going through MSN. They seem to solve the probelm but temporarily.

Have you tried doing a tracert to the sites to see where the blockage is happening? If you get a message saying the host name cannot be resolved, then you have a problem with your DNS (or your ISP's DNS). Also, can you reach them from the administrator account?

I have heard of some problems with Hotmail recently, but have not actually seen them. Occasionally I have that problem with Yahoo, but it is not consistent.

My guess is that it is a problem on the other end.

Is this on Gates Foundation PC that has been upgrade to Win 2K?

(I know that seems very specicif but I have seen this come up a lot of upgrade Gates PCs).

Check your date settings, including the time zone, in the lower right of your screen and make sure they are correct.

I've never tried a tracert, that's a good idea.

We are on Windows 2000 Professional, as it came installed. I've checked the date and time settings. The Trouble Desk at the Gates Foundation suggested we turn off the adjust Daylight Savings Time function and to update Macromedia Flash and Shockwave. I've done this but still don't seem to be able to get through.

We have a different IP configuration going on. Our IS department wanted to use dynamic addresses and because of licensing issues with our databases forwards our IP address so the database recognizes the authorized range, even though all the computers are set for DHCP. Could that be part of the problem? It seems to be when we started having problems, that and when Hotmail changed their system.

Hmm, I suppose it could, but not sure how. What kind of router are you going through before you get to the internet? Is it an intelligent router or a NAT router like a Cable/DSL model?

In other words, is your IP address on the computer the same one that is being presented to the internet or does the router have a single address it presents for all the computers behind it?

We are also having a similar problem but it seems to be related to our intnernet filter, Bess (N2H2).

Patrons are becoming quite angry with the librarians because they cannot access their email.

Anyone else using N2H2, or for that matter any internet filtering product , that has also experienced this problem??

Welcome to the forum, NCRL!

Good question about the possibility of filtering interfering with access to Internet e-mail. If I may ask, how did you determine the problem was related to N2H2? Are your patrons receiving some sort of error message?

As far as I know, we've not seen instances of filtering interfering with web-based e-mail access at the Foundation.

How I figured out it was Bess causing the problems was to remove the Bess proxy settings from the user account. Once this was done, I never had a problem accessing Yahoo web mail. (I had to create a Yahoo email account for myself to test it. ) Also, on our public access computers supplied by the Gates Foundation, the Exec account is unfiltered. When I was at a location that was having a problem, I could alwasy log into the exec account and access Yahoo mail. That said, we never allow patrons access to the Exec account, so that was not a solution.

Hi Gerry, are you a library patron or staff member? Is it only hotmail that you can't access?

I've noticed that the pages for both Yahoo! and Hotmail have taken longer to load since they added more space for members mail. I wonder if that has anything to do with these issues?

Hi all,
I had a similar problem with hotmail and I found what it was. I was forcing the computers to go through our proxy (Winroute Pro) and apparently hotmail hates proxys. As soon as i stopped the computers from going through Winroute Pro, all was well.

Hope this helps,

Is anyone having odd problems with Hotmail, on Gates computers, not displaying properly? On some of these machines patrons can log in, but can't read messages or do anything - everything ends up being blue. But other machines are fine, and non-Gates machines don't seem to be a problem. I wondered if it was somehow related to Hotmail upgrades? These are NT's (but one of our express machines is also NT and doesn't have this problem).

Does it only happen when the patrons try to access Hotmail using Internet Explorer? If you've tightened the security in IE, maybe it's causing problems. Do you have another browser on the machines (like Firefox) that you could try?

It's true, we are only using IE so I haven't tried the other browser idea. Staff members are telling me it seems to "rotate" among machines - one day it will be fine, but the next day the same machine will be a problem. I haven't verified this myself but I wouldn't be surprised! I haven't made any changes (other than installing the Gates profile lock/unlock tool - could this be related?).

We're having the same issue here - but the problem is consistent. Patrons can get to their hotmail inbox, but when they click on the emails, javascript errors occur and they can't view the actual emails. They also can't get to their contacts at all from any of the menus. The page displays quite oddly - as if some of the stylesheets or javascript didnt' fully load.

We're not using filtering, so that can't be causing our problem. Any other ideas? Are there gates computers that work with hotmail all the time?

I'm glad to hear we're not the only ones. I haven't been methodical in my checking of machines to determine if there are any that don't have the problem - that would be a good test. I haven't done any updates on these, I admit, so maybe there is something from Microsoft that would help? Although I don't think there is much available for NT any more - I am amazed they are still working as well as they are.

Looks like we got a "solution" - the problem was that the computers hadn't been patched. We unlocked the computers, and simply did let windows update download and install the patches it thought the computers needed, and hotmail began working again properly.

I bet when they upgraded hotmail, they were relying on users to have installed all recent patches.

Hope this helps,
Meg

oohh... We are not alone!! YIPPEE!!! I feel so much better!! It is only happening on a few of our computers... and it is a royal PITA to "quiz" patrons as to which email programs they will be accessing certain webmails only work on certain computers!! I will pass this along to the appropriate person and PERHAPS that will be the answer to our problems. We shall see.... THANK YOU!!!

Not sure if this belongs in a new thread, but . . .

As of today,we are having problems with sending mail, and saving drafts on our public pcs both in hotmail, and yahoo. These are PA gates computers. Sometimes (has yet to happen for me, in my account, but I've seen it happen), clicking "Send" crashes the browser without sending the message. Same true with saving drafts in yahoo mail. Patrons report it happens more when replying, then w/ a fresh composition. The machines have both firefox and IE, and it happens w/ both. I'm pretty sure the PCs are up to date, but will check this weekend. We are using squid/squidguard as a filter. Anyone else experiencing this?
