Turbo Tax & Admin rights
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
A patron donated copy of Turbo Tax 2003 Deluxe but afer installation it won't run in the All profile because it requires Admin rights.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

Thanks

First question is, does it really need Admin rights, or does it just need permission to write to the particular folder it wants to save to.

Assuming it is probably the latter (if it is the former, I would recommend not installing it), you should start by giving "Everyone" of "Users" modify permission to the Turbo Tax Folder.

However, you should really think twice about this. If the program is written to automatically save user data to the hard drive, you are permanently saving patron personal tax data. Unless you have a Centurion Guard (or Deep Freeze, etc.) this will be there for everyone else to see. Even with a CG, you would need to reboot the computer after use (and of course the patron would need to back up to the floppy).

Dale is right on the mark on this. There are also important licensing issues. Turbo-Tax is intended to be used by one taxpayer only. By allowing multiple patrons to use the software, you are violating the license agreement and could potentially end up costing your library money.

You further will come in to problems if patrons want to file electronically. Again, if I remember correctly, it is designed for one person to file electronically.

You could investigate a multi-user license arrangement, but that would probably be prohibitively expensive.

Doesn't the IRS now have a way to file taxes from their site?
