Pay fees online?
1:36 PM EDT 4/1/08
Hi all,

I was wondering if any library has instituted a system that allows patrons to pay their fees (i.e. overdue fees) online.

Has anyone done this? If so, what have been the challenges? What system, software do you use?

Thanks for any input!

Jocelyn

Here are some libraries that have implemented online payment. I have not been involved in any of these projects, but they might provide some contacts for you to get additional information. Depending on your state, it looks like some have programs through their state treasurer's / comptroller's office to provide such a service. Otherwise, it looks like some of the ILS vendors are providing this service.

Pay Fees online with e-Pay

Pay library fines and fees using your MasterCard, American Express, or Discover Card from the convenience of home. There are some restrictions to this service: we cannot process your credit card payment over the phone or at the front desk.

What are the different ways I can pay my library fines?

Library fines can be paid at any CML location by cash, check, or credit or debit card. You can also pay them online with Visa or MasterCard through our website by clicking on "My Account," entering your library card number and PIN, and selecting "Pay your fines/fees online." Fines can also be paid over the phone with a credit or debit card by calling 614-645-2ASK(2275), and speaking with a library staff member.

Great question Jocelyn! As online payment becomes more ubiquitous, demand for services like this will probably increase.

For that reason -- and because I'd like to pay _my_ fines online -- this is now the official "Question of the Week."

Members should respond with their comments in this message thread.

Hi, Pierce County Library System (WA) now has online payment via credit card.

Our ILS is Polaris. The patron goes to the patron account section and click a "Pay Fees Now" icon.

I can't tell you anything about the ups and downs of setting it up, but believe it is working great for us now.

(The only odd thing is the looks I get at the Information Desk when I tell people that "At the front desk, you can pay with check or cash; if you want to pay via credit card I can show you how to do that at a public computer. They don't take credit cards at the front desk!" ;-).

We're working up to allowing credit cards later this spring. We'll be using a service, E-Pay, that's run through the Illinois Treasurer's office: http://www.illinoisepay.com/

Unfortunately, VISA hasn't signed on.

In my view, this has three great points in its favor even though the library patron will have to pay a small service fee.

First, simple convenience. If you've only got $10 in your wallet it's an easy solution to the immediate problem.

Second, deferred payment. A patron who might shy at writing a $50 check for a lost item may not hesitate if this can be put on a credit card. Heck, they might even get airline miles. ;-)

Third, helping kids. There are numerous kids who lose borrowing privileges because their parents do not want to pay the accrued fines (etc.). Making it easier to pay (as in points one and two above) means that at least some kids will be using the library who could not do so before.

Thanks, everyone, for you input so far.

Let me add some more information:
Our ILS is Sirsi and we are an academic library. We would like to have this kind of service so students can pay late fees and replacement costs online. We have our system set up so as when an item becomes overdue and the fine reaches $2.10 the student gets blocked at the business office (they can't register for classes, get transcripts, yada yada yada). The business office uses a collections agency to...well...you know.

Keep your thoughts coming emoticon

Thanks!
