Problems with Adobe Reader PDF on Gates machines
3:06 PM EST 2/13/08
Hello,

In the course of updating software as we went to Adobe Reader 7.0 and above, patrons can no longer open PDF files on the gates computers when trying to access pdf files from a website or as a file attachment.

The program does not appear, however when one chooses the option to select a program from a list- Adobe is right on the list. Additionally, the program appears on the desktop and opens when prompted.

As a go around - sometimes when people open Adobe first then save the pdf file to the desktop and then open the file in Adobe, it works. This is not an easy thing to explain to some patrons (or staff).

I have uninstalled the Public Access Computer Profile Restrictions - ran Adobe from the "all" side of the computer, confirmed pdf files work, but once I re-install the PACPR, shut the computer down and re-lock the centurion guard, the problem comes back.

Has any one had this problem as well? If so, how did you fix it? Has anyone had better luck with Foxit Reader?

Adobe often does an annoying thing where instead of updating the existing version, it actually installs the newer version along side the existing one.

Try:
- Go to exec and remove Profile Restrictions
- Go to Add/Remove and remove all versions of Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader
- Download and install the latest version
- Go to all (unlocked) and make sure it works
- Lock it all back up.
